'They' don't need to, the film industry just needs to make the present system a little less top-heavy....there is no doubt it is over-represented by middle-aged white men.
"In an article, first published in 2012, the Los Angeles Times found Oscar voters are nearly 94% Caucasian and 77% male. Black members make up about 2% of the Academy, and Latino members less than 2%"

This is from the following BBC link :::

94% white doesn't seem very evenly distributed to me.
In what sense is that "the full hog"? Sigh...
Has anybody thought that Charlotte Rampling was right, and for the last couple of years no coloured person was considered worthy of an award? Oh I'm sorry I can't say that it might upset the PC gang.
"Coloured People " ?

Ye Gods !
The problem starts earlier than that.....in that far too many casting directors want white 'bankable' stars for the roles they are offering thereby almost guaranteeing that the sorts of roles which gain nominations rarely go to black actors in the first place.
But if 94% of Academicians are white, is it any surprise that non-whites don't get nominated ?
Navel gazing guff.
Motown is predominantly black. Black thespians best sing.
Better still, simply abandon the Oscars and similar ceremonies. As I said in an earlier question on this topic, I fail to see why Thespians feel the need to hold ceremonies of self-congratulation and aggrandisement.

Having said that, if they are to be continued and if black people do feel disenfranchised or under represented all they need to do is to set up their own film industry (rather like “Bollywood” in India) with its own awards system. I’m sure there are plenty of films that could be made with an exclusively black cast. I have a suggestion for a nickname for such an industry but if it passes the censor it will be howled down as racist, so I won’t bother.

In short, a storm in a teacup.
You mean like the Black Reel or MOBO awards, which on more than one occasion (as I have mentioned in separate threads of this) have been the difference between Black actors getting any recognition and none at all?

We need to be careful in this not to see ugly racism where there is only the difficult-to-avoid unconscious bias -- or even just a statistical blip -- but, after centuries of discrimination or even outright oppression, to pretend that everything is hunky-dory now is equally short-sighted.

What are the percentages of Black footballers in Premiership football or even Olympic athletics?

Mikey, when I was at school we couldn’t call black people “black”. We had to say they were “coloured”.

Now I cannot call a black person “coloured”. It has to be "black".

Apparently “ethnic minority” is now wrong. It has to be “minority ethnic” (Yeah, right - a world of difference).

I don’t usually refer to anybody in any way that describes their skin colour unless it’s absolutely necessary, but is it any wonder I’m confused?

When are they going to realise that they live in a predominantly white society?
Before the idea of a Black Academy gets any further down the road, I think there's need to define where 'black' ends and 'everyone else' begins.

In the interest of clarity of course.

Pointless agitation from professional dressers up.
Do you ever ask a question that does not involve the minorities? You seem to have a real bee in your bonnet I would hate to be so sad and bitter in my advancing years!
///When are they going to realise that they live in a predominantly white society? ///

Are we moving away from an 'Oscar-specific' thread onto a general gripe about the uppity-blacks refusing to acknowledge their lowly position in society?
Paddy, mikey and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People don't like you saying 'coloured'.

/// "There's loads of black actors. In the end you can't vote for an actor because he's black. You can't say 'I'm going to vote for him, he's not very good, but he's black, I'll vote for him'." ///

Michael Caine.
so now theyll be under pressure to vote for a black, even if its a crap performance...still as long as it keeps the black minority happy...takers not makers....
