We have witnessed the rumpus over the Oscars, but little has been said regarding the BET nominations, until Donald Trump brought it up.

The BET Awards was established back in 2001 (surprised at that, I thought it was much older), because at that time, black achievers weren't really celebrated in Hollywood.
In fact, one of the narratives that have been applied to the Oscars is, "Well, perhaps black actors aren't good enough to be nominated."
These awards shine a light on positive aspirational black achievers, who are role models for a younger generation.
I personally don't like the idea of a black awards show...but if you leave it to the rest of Hollywood, you might actually start believing in the whole 'not good enough' line.
And that would be tragic.
In an ideal world, there would be no need for a separate black channel/awards show, but I fear we are a long way from that.
Hollywood isn't racist per se. It's governed by what sells. That's the bottom line. It reflects public tastes and desires. I read a while ago that the reason you rarely see black models on the cover of high end fashion magazines, is because of sales. They will lose something like 10% of sales when a black model is on the cover (who isn't Naomi Campbell).
This doesn't make Vogue racist. It is a matter of economics.
If Hollywood cannot reflect society because of the economics of the film industry, then it's not Hollywood which is at fault...it's the general public.
This is why the BETs exist. Not to exclude (although it does), but to celebrate, where the doors to existing celebrations are either closed, or only open a crack.

Surely it is the same in all industry, merit = gain. I know of many black actors who are doing a very good job but I feel they are in the minority. Young black men & women must strive to achieve promotion ( as should every young person). I abhor what would appear to be the present trend in some quarters that one must have a token number of minority groups to show non racial bias when overall it should be on merit alone.

Yes...awards should be on merit alone, but that's impossible, because they are based on judgement, and many factors affect judgement.
As an example...the winner of the mens' 400 metres sprint at the next Olympics will be the chap who ran the fastest. There is no wriggle room there. He will win because he is the best runner on the day.
However, the winner of an acting award, or a music award or any award that is based on a judgement call, doesn't just win that award on merit. There are a load of other factors which determine the win, which means there is always room for some to shout "Rubbish!" from the stalls.

It is a sight to behold svejk. The lefties are tearing themselves apart. In the last few weeks they have monstered their very own doyens of Liberal fanaticism, Meryl Streep, Germaine Greer, Peter Tatchell,. They have all been trolled and howled at by the baying pack. The leftie thought police are doing a pretty good imitation of Erysichthon of Thessaly and devouring themselves.
