That is what it has been doing since the link between smoking and cancer was proved by Sir Richard Doll, in the 1950's. I can recall that the Tobacco Industry, in the form of FOREST, its propaganda wing which it funds, were still trying to deny the link as recently as the early 90's.
What I fail to understand is why our Government takes any notice whatsoever of the industry, when it comes to making laws. Advertising was eventually outlawed, but only after years of delaying tactics. The Head Teacher stopped them from coming into the school grounds a few years ago, which caused lots of outrage and there was a great deal of waving of cigarettes around in the air I noticed.
Smoking prevalence rates amongst the less well-off population are significantly greater than those of the more affluent population and its these kind of people that seem to be the most reluctant to stop smoking.
