I do a fair bit of baking and I'm often asked by family, friends and colleagues to make a cake for little celebrations.

I made a couple of Ferrero Rocher cakes recently, a cherry almond bakewell, a courgette and pistachio cake, a toffee apple crumble cake and I'm even considering making a gulab jamun inspired cake. The most recent thing I baked was a carrot and parsnip cake.

However, for me, you just can't beat a nice Victoria sponge with fresh cream and jam. No other country in the world can make a cake to compete with that, imo.

German Black Forest gateau?
date and walnut
Question Author
Aha, Danny. I did one of those about 2 years ago, but it probably wasn't the most authentic. I think I covered the whole thing in chocolate ganache.

Date and walnut....yummy...
Almost any with lots of dried fruit in.

The one I don't care much for is stoma cake.
What ever is available at the time.
I'm with danny...Black Forest Gateau is my fav.

In general I don't eat cakes though.
These days I prefer something light so I go for panettone.

I haven't got a huge sweet tooth, Ummmm and chocolate cake certainly isn't on my list of faves.
mind you, a simple scone with jam and cream takes some beating

Indeed it does. I did have one or two cream teas in the Cotswolds last year.
My other half is the baker in this house, it's too faffy and precise for me.
Yesterday he made a chocolate and beetroot cake, which is lovely but not my favourite. He made a carrot cake last month, again, it was very nice but not my first choice.
However, his lemon and poppyseed cupcakes are to die for. I'm currently trying to find a recipe for a large one rather than individual cupcakes, not lemon drizzle but just like the cupcakes.
They're my favourite, I love lemony things.

Lemon drizzle for me - by a mile. I also agree with you about Victoria sponge.

I had a Sainsbury's one, ethandron:

200g Butter (I use Bertolli instead)

250g Caster Sugar

3 Large eggs

300g SR flour (I used McDougals Supreme sponge flour) sifted.

Juice and zest of 1.5 lemons.

1 tsp of Sicilian Lemon extract.

I bake this as a sandwich cake and put cream and lemon curd in between. I add icing sugar and some of the lemon extract to the whisked double cream.
Caraway seed cake
My favourite is iced coffee cake. Yummy!
I don't have much of a sweet tooth but do like cheese cake. (Any Flavour)
Cinnamon crumble cake.....yum!
Thanks NoM.
While browsing the sainsburys recipe site, I've come across one called a carnation lemon drench cake, with poppyseeds in it and using condensed milk and ground almonds. Himself fancies making that so that's next weeks cake sorted :)
