DB....in the link above, the Braman uses words like "English people are leaving and it's becoming ghettoized"
Unless the Census facts are wrong, then its quite clearly seen that the vast majority of Peterborough's residents are still white and British.
If he is bemoaning that all the Pubs have closed down, then that is what has been happening all over Britain and has been happening for many years.
But I am puzzled by the headline " the last English pub left"
If Peterborough has a population approaching 200,000, are we supposed to believe that there is now only one "English" Pub left ?( not sure how that is defined )
Is he talking about the City of Peterborough, or just his part of it ? And exactly how does he define "his part of it"
The AP article is written extremely badly......lots of emotion but very few, if any facts.

Peterborough in the 50's.
Population of about 65,000, the "nice" areas were indeed "upmarket"..detached houses with drives, particularly in the area in which Barmaid lives...Thorpe Road and surroundings.
The Sh.thouse area described by Barmaid were rows and rows of terraced houses and was where i was brought up and lived until i went to Med school. Roads were clean, recreation ground to play all sports, 2 male Grammar Schools, one female grammar school and one private girl's school. Sport and education was available to ALL...rich and poor and it was always Conservative.
The only immigrants at that time were Irish and they were a pain in the @rse, particularly on a Saturday night outside the pubs.
I took my kids in the late 70's to see where their father was born and Barmaid is right....it was a sh.thole full of Asian immigrants.

It's actually very pleasant round here. I look out on the lake, I can walk to two supermarkets, the vets, two pubs, several restaurants. I love the fact that I can obtain almost any food here - we have great speciality supermarkets which sell indian/chinese/thai/polish/italian food. The cathedral is lovely, the guildhall fascinating - we also have the most complete example of medieval wall paintings in a domestic setting at Longthorpe. It is only a short drive to many lovely stone towns such as Stamford, Oundle and Oakham and to the country. Great rail links, great road links.
Every city has its bad points. I think interviewing one barman who runs a tiny backstreet pub in a less than salubrious area was rather sloppy and lazy reporting.
