I'm not sure what the law is in Germany but you can here. I bought a machete 2 weeks ago from my village Ironmongers without any trouble at all.

If you search for things like this you are going to find them. There was a case yesterday in my home town where a worker at a large company in the town attacked two other workers with an axe. He seriously injured them both and is now in custody charged with two counts of attempted murder. No 'racial or political' motive however it looks very much like it is going to be a case of 'insanity' . If he had been a Muslim I would not be surprised to see it go down as 'racist' though.

you can buy a machete just like you can buy a car. Don't know which is more lethal, but they are both made for non-lethal purposes.

Click and collect at Argos is probably easiest. You can only buy packets of 16 paracetamol most places though, in case you hurt yourself.

To answer the question, yes you can just go and buy a machete as long as you are over 18. You can buy a them in garden shops no problem. You can also buy a butcher's meat cleaver, a tree felling axe, a chef's knife with a 2ft blade or an electric chain saw all are fully legal and all can easily kill people.
Luckily we are not the USA or he could have bought a machine gun and a few thousand rounds of ammunition and we would be looking at another gun massacre.

In the UK it is perfectly legal to buy machetes and other potentially lethal weapons but it is illegal to have them in a public place without good reason. Public place includes the inside of your vehicle on a public highway for this purpose.

I don't know German law so can only add my feelings of horror at this news story.

We're all assuming the weapon was bought in Germany. It may have been bought elsewhere.
