And I wonder why we haven't had need of these before?

Couldn't be that we now have incidents or threatened incidents, that this country has never experienced before?

Even during WW2 I can never remember our police needing to take such extreme measures.

Firstly, I don't think there are any 'Islamic sympathisers' on here, and secondly, the change likes at the door of Islamist terrorists, not Islam, there is a profound, essential, and largely ignored by some, difference.

Thanks, but I have read all of Vetuste's 'enlightening' posts - they remain his opinion, as this is mine - I see no reason to adjust my position on the basis of anything he has said so far.

I've seen plenty of Islamic support and it has often been highlighted by people using the term 'Friends of Jihad' which I'm sure you will have seen Andy.

Nevertheless, back to the OP. Without doubt the increase in armed officers and the introduction of highly armed Police cannot be laid at any door other than ISLAM.

I am puzzled by your linking of Islamic support and Friends of Jihad, youngmafbog.
What you refer to as the 'Islamic support' on here seems to me to actually be those of us who support non-terrorists who are peaceful, law abiding citizens- whatever their faith (Christianity, Islam, none...)- and feel that all Muslims should not be held responsible and punished (by closing mosques or being held under house arrest without any evidence) for the dreadful crimes of a few.
The terms Friends of Jihad seems to be used as a term of abuse trotted out by those who just want to have a dig at anyone who doesn't dislike all Muslims.
I think quite a few on here would be happy to say they do not automatically not support Islam but no-one on here is a friend of Jihad

I really can't believe some posts on Answerbank. One minute cries of 'something must be done' and the next a complaint that something has been done.

i don't think anyone is denying that it's been done as an anti terorrism measure. They'd be silly if they did, seeing as it's been splashed all over just about every paper in our Sceptr'd Isle.

It's almost as if you're screaming at the screen salivating uncontrollably and slamming your fist in a " I TOLD YA SO!" Stance on the table as you made that comment.

Calm down, this isn't a "Robocop" but an elite unit as explained above and guess what? If a non islamic terrorist group, lone wolf bomber etc.. Became a threat to lives then I'm pretty sure they'd dispatch this unit and not say " Oh well their not muslim so let's send in unarmed uniformed bobbies for this one sarge"

The US has always had SWAT, it's about time we had our own unit to deal with riots,etc..

Agreed Joeluke. Our Police should have been armed a long time ago. I'd feel safer in a crowd knowing the bobby I was standing next to had an Mp5 and frag grenades then an outdated truncheon.
