But remember only 6% of trucks get checked on arrival in the UK, it is estimated that over 90% of stowaways are never detected!, so just disappear into the 'black economy'.
Food products can totally legally be sold as 'UK' produced or 'Scottish/Irish produced ' if any part of the production process is performed in the UK/ Ireland.
So they just need to import the food from anywhere in the world and repack or sort it in the UK for it to be fully legally sold as 'UK/ Scottish/ Irish' produce.
Just look at how much beef product is labeled 'Scottish Beef' when only a tiny % really is reared , slaughtered and packed in Scotland! All they need is a packing station in the UK to use the 'UK produced' label , what you need to look for is 'UK grown' if you really want home produced food.

TWR, As I have just said, the driver pays the fine and the company who owns the truck stands the cost of having their load destroyed as well as losing it. This is one of the main complaints the haulage companies have with the system! The government do nothing but rely on the drivers / transport companies to do the job for them. Having said that inspecting every truck would slow down the import system so much it would be uneconomic to ever import anything!.

It doesn't matter what was inside the lorry. If it wasn't Aunt Bessie's spuds it would be something else.
These people will, by now, be safely ensconced in some sort of taxpayer funded accommodation (those that are not receiving "free" medical care, that is) and they will remain in that cossetted state for the rest of their days. We know the lorry in which they were found came from France; as illegal immigrants they should have been returned there forthwith. But that, I suppose, is asking too much.

'Someone has opened the door for this lot' If the truck really has secure locks then only the driver could let them in!
There are many drivers who will allow people to hide in their truck, knowing there is only a 6% chance of being checked at customs, and that they can claim ignorance if they are found out. £1000 a person is a huge temptation!!
