Racism has been rife in America for generations. It started when white people and native American Indians were killing each other, progressed with slavery, racial segregation then the KKK and other white supremacists. The KKK started in 1860 and segregation lasted until the 1960s in some states.

Americans are a very insular people. Anything which promises to save them from the 'wrong' sort of immigrant, to preserve the image it has of itself as the most important country on the planet, to restore its riches and help it to export its notion of democracy and 'freedoms' around the world will find great favour.

That these promises spring forth from an undesirable, lumpen buffoon is a minor inconvenience, it seems, to a great many of them...

racism was a problem for black people for many years, mikey.

However, I read one analysis the other day about Trump's "platform" saying that most Americans didn't care what he planned to do with Muslims because they didn't know any Muslims, didn't care what he planned to do with Mexicans because they didn't know any Mexicans.... but they do know women, they have white women in their own families, and hearing what he does with women, all of a sudden they feel they couldn't leave their wives and daughters in the same room with a presidential candidate. So his latest indiscretion is hitting home in a way other ones haven't.
