I’m not suggesting anything at all, Gromit. On this particular issue I fully expect, exceptionally for politicians (especially those from the EU), that common sense will prevail and that those people who have already taken advantage of their EU rights to settle anywhere in the bloc, will be permitted to remain where they are. It is my own preferred option because, as firm as I am on Leaving, I (along with most Leavers) do not want to see wholesale enforced repatriations in either direction. However, if the EU was so foolish as to insist on compulsory repatriations of UK citizens from the EU I would not expect the UK to simply say “Oh, all right then”.

You will note that “Associate citizenship” is in inverted commas, Eddie. The deal being discussed is not citizenship because, much as it would like us to think it has, the EU does not have its own citizenship to offer, either associate or otherwise. The proposal is simply a deal for UK citizens who wish to pay for it to retain some rights that they currently have as a citizen of an EU member nation. Good luck to them if that’s what they want. I personally would not give the EU a single penny of my hard-earned voluntarily and so long as the facility is not made available the other way round (i.e. to let citizens of the remaining EU nations have their EU rights extended to the UK) them I’m not fussed.

Not true.Only today Theresa May reiterated that she would nt give any assurances on the matter until the EU gave reciprocal assurances for Ex pats living in the EU.

Unless the EU guarantees the status of UK nationals in their area right now, it is ludicrous to expect the UK to jump the gun and start making promises. But if "EU nationals" aren't allowed to stay here it obviously won't have been caused by the UK but be simply a reflection on what the EU decided was right.

Much as we might like this process to be done and dusted, the practical reality is that it will take many months.
Until then, uncertainty and possibly anxiety will be a regrettable but unavoidable consequence for many people in many contexts.
And it will continue to annoy certain sections of the Media who want to have answers on everything right now; particularly those commentators still confused and annoyed that their preference wasn't shared by the majority of the electorate.

You could be right zacs regarding press media and I may be overly aware of Channel 4 News; the old duffer Jon Snow and Cathy Newman are clearly obsessed with their " there's no plan, it's all a disaster, why isn't everyone as clever as us and see it?" agenda

I've just heard a quote on BBC Radio Cambridge that bears repeating.
An MP ( didn't get the name) was saying, actually getting fully out of the EU would take 'several years', because it was like 'trying to take an egg back out of an omelette after you made it!' The EU and UK are so intermixed that in many cases they have become one and the same.
Sorry I can't give a link, I was driving and just heard it on the radio.

I don't thinks it's quite that 'impossible' but we certainly weren't told the truth of the complexities or longevity of the process before we voted. The situation could cost us more money than either leaving or staying as the world watches us mire ourselves in red tape, legal wranglings and general playground spats.
