Who does she think she is? Having a baby is not a modern innovation it has been going on for centuries.
If I had bought a first class ticket I would not have been best please to sit next to a woman with a screaming baby even if she HAD bought a first class ticket and would have been infuriated to learn that she HADN'T purchased the appropriate ticket.

It was quite correct that she should have been......evicted.

I'd be asking for money back if I had paid first class and all and sundry was allowed to invade my space..oi Sqad pack the Vuittons ..we are going on a rail trip !!! with banners of protest..and appropriate tickets !!!
If the lady HAD paid for a first class seat she would, presumably, have been allowed to sit there.
So, nothing to do with "invasion of space". Just the selfish mentality that someone's getting something for less than what I paid for

Still it brought the Tories to power in 2010, I guess ( I remember those posters)
This seems to be a typical story about mother and baby shaming and oh how unjust and unfare people are. When in reality to is about the appropriate fare being paid for a seat on a train.

If all mothers now have priority then they might just as well buy the cheapest ticket and flood the more expensive seating.

I have no sympathy for the mother and although the woman's comment about respecting elders was perhaps out of order the fact the seat had not been paid for by the mother it was right to not allow her to stay.
hardly selfish..you pays your money..you gets your choice ! simple !

\\\\\If the lady HAD paid for a first class seat she would, presumably, have been allowed to sit there. \\\\
Seems reasonable to me.

\\\\So, nothing to do with "invasion of space". Just the selfish mentality that someone's getting something for less than what I paid for \\\

Exactly.

\\\\Still it brought the Tories to power in 2010, I guess ( I remember those posters)\\\

Agreed...Vote Tory and travel first class.
What about the selfish mentality of the mother? JUST because you have a child in tow does not give you the right to something you have no right to. But that is the shambolic Labour mentality of everyone gets something for nothing.
ichkeria, // Just the selfish mentality that someone's getting something for less than what I paid for //

Why is that selfish? People pay for First Class in order to travel more comfortably. There's little point in wasting their money if they can sit where they like anyway.

Well said Sqad.
It doesn't report how full the rest of the train was.
-- answer removed --
Firstly, she DID have a right to sit there on that particular day.

Secondly, it's not "selfish" to want to pay extra for a better class of travel, but my point was that anyone with a First Class ticket could just as easily have come and sat there and the person beside it would have had no complaint. The only possible reason for the complaint was simply that the person had not paid the same money for the ticket. To my mind, that is selfish.
The train company had stated that due to their problems that passengers could sit anywhere. It did not say that you can sit in first class only when others are full therefore the mother was perfectly within her rights.
I stopped using first class when they continually allowed scum into the carriage.

\\\ To my mind, that is selfish.\\
I disagree.

\\\\Firstly, she DID have a right to sit there on that particular day.\\\

Nothing official, just what another passenger had said.....never confirmed.
I got the impression from that article and from the other passengers that the train had been declassified due to disruption.
Sqad, Southern Rail is in chaos already. Hence passengers being told they can sit in any seat.
I have considerably more money than yow so I am more important seems to be theme here.

I could never see a woman carrying a baby stand when I have a seat.
That's my thoughts, hc, pure snobbery...
Seconded hc. Well said.

You make a very good point one of which i have some sympathy.
It would depend upon the attitude of woman and child and although i have no evidence for my comments, but just knowing the "modern mother"...it wouldn't surprise me if she took a dictatorial attitude.
