Likewise I commented that I found Michelle Obama equally crass on this point, and I am happy to agree with you that some cultural norms are untenable and impossible to endorse or adhere to under any circumstances ( female circumcision, stoning people to death, illegality of homosexuality to name but a few).

andy-hughes, //The sight of a woman - especially a Western woman, with her head uncovered, would cause severe embrassment and discomfort to Ms. Le Pen's hosts//
On my visits to Lebanon I don’t recall it ever being compulsory for a woman to cover her head and therefore the sight of a bare headed woman will come as no great shock to the Grand Mufti.
According to Reuters, Marine le Pen has now cancelled the meeting anyway.

According to wikipedia:
Lebanon is a parliamentary democracy, which implements a special system known as confessionalism. This system is intended to deter sectarian conflict and attempts to represent fairly the demographic distribution of the 18 recognized religious groups in government. High-ranking offices are reserved for members of specific religious groups. The President, for example, has to be a Maronite Christian, the Prime Minister a Sunni Muslim, the Speaker of the Parliament a Shi’a Muslim, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Eastern Orthodox.

Talbot - //Spare me the the sermon, andy ... you are telling me nothing that I don't already know. //
If you ask the question, quote 'For funk's sake why?' - then you can't really blame me for supplying you with an answer. If you as advise you already know, then why are you asking?
// You are however trying to justify it. //
That is your interpretation, which, not for the first time, is incorrect. At no point did I say that the dress restriction is right, or that I agree with it, and I have already pointed that out.
//The notion that so many women actually want to cover themselves up from head to toe is laughable ... //
To you maybe - but that does not invalidate it in the eyes of women who choose to do it.
It's easy to take a lofty Western view that our emancipated view is the only view, and women everywhere in the world should be living by our rules and standards, and if they don't they are subjugated, or just stupid.
It's that sort of assumption that drags western countries into wars because we assume that democracy is right for everyone, and they must have it, by military force if necessary.
If you can learn to read the difference between pointing something out, which I did, and agreeing that it is acceptable, which I did not, you won't have to ask questions to which you claim you know the answer - even when you clearly don't.
