Not usually, and we know which party to thank for that, don't we, boys and girls?

Looks like it

///Russell Hobby, general secretary of school leaders' union NAHT, said: "We are extremely disappointed that the government are determined to push ahead and implement the multiplication check.
"It is both unnecessary and un-costed and won't tell teachers or parents anything that they don't already know."///
Should be done at primary school when there is a chance of them wanting to learn them. Once they get to age 10 if they don't know them it's very difficult to get them to want to make the effort. A test wouldn't worry them. Most don't see the point (" I have a phone to do that") Regular work is done to practise the skills and there are non-calculator exams which require you to do written/mental calculations without a calculator, but you can take a horse to water and all that...

The times table is the basis of all arithmetic, and consequently all mathematics. Its inconceivable that some children don't know these very basic and not very difficult things, before they go up to the secondary school.

Why are they not being taught ?

They don't seem to learn their tables by rote anymore but they do seem to do maths that is too difficult for their age range (imo).

Jack....stupid thing to say, but congratulations for getting the first anti-Muslim rant into this thread.....I didn't think it would take long !
You're welcome.
SherrardK - totally agree.
They only know the tune now and cannot sing the words, consequently they all spend a lesson going...da da dada, da da dada, da da dada.
>Avatar Image Jackdaw33 'Why are they not being taught'? Because Labour thinks it's elitist and discriminates against our horde of Moslem children.

Actually children from Eastern Europe and of Asian/African heritage are far more likely to know their tables. The Eastern European children are years ahead.

///am an experienced teacher, new Labour Party and NUT member. I intend to submit a policy proposal to the party, explaining why I believe private and grammar schools should be phased out.///

///I recommend that the Labour Party should adopt the following policies:

Turn all private and grammar schools into non-fee paying, non-selective state schools over a period of five to 10 years. This can be done gradually starting with each school’s youngest intake.
Within its first five-year term, increase government spending per child to at least the higher North West European average.
Any government funded school judged to be ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted should have a legal duty to reserve places equivalent to the percentage of students eligible for free school meals in the local authority, including such students residing outside the school’s catchment area.///
I too agree with Sherr they do some very tough Maths.

///This paper proposes that the Labour Party adopt a policy that seeks to phase out all private schools (also known as independent schools) and grammar schools across the UK, on the grounds that they significantly reduce equality of opportunity for the majority of British subjects.///
There is no GCSE question that asks you to recite your tables but an 11/12 year old is expected to be able to work out 23.4 x 59.3 without a calculator. The lack of knowledge of times tables will impede them though - it is a problem
Some posters on here have a sickening obsession with race /religion and spoil sensible discussions by riding their hobby horse of hatred

Hardly a day goes by, when I am out shopping, where I don't use the very basic arithmetic that are the times tables.
