SP, ahh right. Thanks.
KHan's actually said about T4L

// Did you know there are 16 people on the board of TfL?Thirteen of them are white men. Think about it . It only has three women on it. That's less than one in five.
It needs to better reflect London's diversity in the interest of Londoners. //

Are you really arguing that is racist?

Out of interest - what is it about the judge that would preclude him from being able to exercise his duties in a professional manner?

Is it fair to assume that if someone is from a particular racial demographic, their background compromises their professionalism?
sp1814 - //Is it fair to assume that if someone is from a particular racial demographic, their background compromises their professionalism? //

President Trump would say not - his ethnicity allows him enthusiastically to embrace the consummate racist attitude he has brought to the role of President thus far.
Thanks Gromit...I suspected that Khan was misquoted there, and I was right.

I've looked up the context of his quote, and he was alluding to the fact that the board was all white and heavily skewed towards men (only three out of the sixteen are women).

With the hundreds of thousands of women and non-white workers in TfL, it's notable that the board isn't represtative, but it would make more sense to verify that hiring, promotion, training and management protocols are equitable, rather than simply promising more diversity.
Gromit - // Are you really arguing that is racist? //

It's not so much an argument, more a case of taking something that someone has said and putting such a large degree of intentional misinterpretation on it that it no longer even vaguely resembles the original statement, and then passing it off as the meaning of the original statement - even though it is clearly anything but.

The other alternative is simply to say something the other person has not said, and then try and start an arguement about that - as I have pointed out earlier in the thread
Gromit, had Khan been an Englishman and the white men black, I wouldn’t have been at all surprised if he was accused of racism.

SP, the judge is human, and as you are well aware human beings do often tend to support those with whom they empathise.
Naomi,

Khan did not accuse moderate muslims of being 'Uncle Toms' . He called people who agreed with him Uncle Toms. He said Government Ministers should not just listen to people who agree (the Uncle Toms) but that they should also listen to the people who disagree.

It was the wrong phrase, and he did appologise, but it was not an accusation against moderates, as the context you seem to be putting onto it.

naomi24

It's racist to suggest that someone's professionalism is questionable because of their race.

Same as it's sexist to say that a woman judge might not be suitable to preside over a rape case, because as a woman she would have sympathy for the victim.

It's a silly thing for Trump to have said.

Silly and racist.
sp1814 - President Trump - saying silly and racist things?

Surely not!!!
Gromit, I’m not putting any context on it. Your video is headed ‘Sadiq Khan calls moderate Muslims Uncle Toms’ and every other report I’ve seen of this incident is similarly labelled. He’s talking specifically about, and I quote, ‘ordinary rank and file citizens of Muslim faith… British groups of Muslim faith’.
SP, I think he had a valid point. You don't. Fair enough.
Naomi,

The title on the YouTube video is put there by the person who uploaded it. In this case a YouTuber called cecil123. The video was taken in 2009 but was uploaded 9 months ago. If you look at the rest of cecil123s postings, they are all anti muslim. The only thing on his About Page is this link

I believe that Donald Trump is a racist because he wants to ban people from entering the U.S. on the basis of their country of origin, and that is virtually a textbook definition of a racist.

So ... Barack Obama is a racist?
Gromit, he was talking about Muslims. Listen to him - and then google 'sadiq khan uncle tom' and look at all the news outlets that carried the story.

Isn't all that totally irrelevant?
You can't (imo) defend Khan's use of the term 'Uncle Toms'
No I cannot defend him using the term Uncle Toms, but he used the wrong term.

He was not accusing moderate muslims of being subserviant and excessively eager to please, which is what the term Uncle Toms means.

He was saying Ministers should listen to every view, and not views that the Minister agrees with. So UncleToms was not used correctly and was a mistake.
But he used it ... he must use the term ...or why say it?
People say the wrong words all the time. This was a slip 8 years ago.
It is not a term I ever hear, but perhaps he hears it because he himself has been accused of being an Uncle Tom?
You're defending him.
