We are now used to the police instantly telling us that the crimi... (well are they criminals if they are mentally ill?) that the perpetrator is mentally ill ... but why have they stated that this bloke is from somewhere that doesn't exist?

Is she speaking about the Guardian report? Or a different paper that has played down the crazed attack , the link gives a factual account of what occurred to my eyes (of course I wasn't there) presumably those are the details that have been released.

Also not sure on the geographical discrepancies.

I do hope her son recovers quickly and fully.

This is my son Domenico lying in Intensive Care at the university hospital... Rampage in Düsseldorf at the HBF central railway station. They hit him on the head from behind with an axe... He had a long operation. The media is playing everything down. That is bad and incomprehensible. Feel free to share this... I love you my son

I'm not sure why you would think there might be any significance to the statement. Maybe it was still Yugoslavia when he left. Maybe the reporters aren't sure whether he was from Serbia, Macedonia or another, or maybe the people reporting it just thought people were more likely to know where Yugoslavia was then where Macedonia etc was.
The Guardian article says "A police spokesman told Agence France-Presse on Friday morning that they had ruled out an Islamic fundamentalist motive for the attack."
The attacker is too injured to be interviewed but hopefully the police and justice system will deal with it
