When I have said before, on AB, that xenophobia was the prime cause of the BREXIT vote, I have been howled down. But in this BBC report from South Wales, its clear that it was a very strong reason behind people voting to leave the EU, at least with older voters.

Even in a Town where there is little immigration, the fear of it persuaded people to vote OUT, even when it has benefited hugely from EU funding.

It make for interesting viewing !

I must admit that I can't see a problem with Polish supermarkets in Hereford, nor have I noticed it particularly resplendent with immigrants than most other towns, nor do they worry me, at all, but then I have a Romanian born partner. The lovely Polish lady at the garage ran after me the other day because I'd dropped my purse, they are just like us. They are just...

// Even in a Town where there is little immigration, the fear of it persuaded people to vote OUT, even when it has benefited hugely from EU funding. //

cornwall voted massively for Brexit altho it has some of the highest EU funding for rural slums and when the cornishmen were asked on Brexit where would the EU money come from - they said
" london of course ! we have a sent a councillor on the train up there this very week to demand our rights.... " ( yes councillor ho hum)

change a few words and it is the same for scotland

Mikey, don’t you think it possible that people there are concerned that with more immigration, the few jobs available to the unskilled may well be lost to them? That’s not xenophobia – that’s common sense. Perhaps you should consider abandoning big words until you understand what they mean. You so often get them wrong.
Oddly, though, the "concern" is very different depending on the age groups you talk to. An obvious concern, and it is expressed at the end of Nick Clegg's film, is what happens if or when the (presumably younger) people who are dissatisfied with their lot, find that Brexit hasn't made them any wealthier, or freer, and, for the older things have not reverted to "how they used to be".
It will take years, possibly generations to turn the UK (in whatever form it may be) into a low-migration economy, tho something tells me what will not happen.

An interesting film mikey, thanks.
ebbw vale was represented by Michael Foot ( one of the Feet brothers - Sir Dingle became Attorney General in the sixties ) and was a hot bed of meat red Trotskyism

how things change
People can be incredibly stupid.

Ratter...but again, what is wrong with shops selling Polish food ?

I use a Polish shop in Swansea every week, as they sell wonderful Rye bread. I would imagine that Swansea has a much larger Polish population than Hereford, but it hasn't changed its central character. Its still the ugly, lovely Town by the Sea.

Again, I ask why are a few Polish shops changing Hereford so utterly ?
In Mikey's defence he can spell xenophobia.

From small acorns...

.. one hopes.
The Polish food shops complaint: if that isn't classic xenophobia then I don't know what is :-)
I do wonder, as Mrs May warbles on about making Britain "truly global" if some Brexitters are actually listening. Did they vote out just so we could have fewer Poles but more Indians? Nick Griffin, where are you??
// there are concerned that with more immigration, the few jobs available to the unskilled may well be lost to them? That’s not ... common sense. // that argument is just plain stupidity such as you see every day on AB

saving low skilled jobs for the Brits who wont do them
( hence commonwealth immigration in the fifties to bring in Jamaicans who would) -isnt it common sense to raise education standards so that the low skilled become erm skilled

such an argument may well be above the average Brexit voter.

This thread is typical of so many on AB nowadays...insult the OP rather than debate the issue.
Mikey, your post at 09:27 has the ring of 'some of my best friends are black' or part of a speech by Nick Clegg.
"ebbw vale was represented by Michael Foot ( one of the Feet brothers - Sir Dingle became Attorney General in the sixties ) and was a hot bed of meat red Trotskyism

Are they so different? It's still people banging on unrealisitically about a world they can't have :-)

Dougie....I am not aware of that speech from Clegg, but is it relevant to this debate ?
Mikey, and not only the OP. Just take a look at PeterPedant’s post at 09:29. Shocking - but I expect no less from him.
Hmm lets brexit so that we can have more of the population on basic wage of £6.87 / h and zero hour contracts....

is NOT an argument I clearly recollect ...

Lets change immigration rules - but we want all the expat Brits to stay where they are as of right
Lets spend no less than £350m a week on the NHS
Oh oops I shouldnt have said that ( The Nige ) post facto
Lets have law we can make sense of (like Sgt B) (details changed a bit)
Lets reduce VAT on fuel on Day 1 !
and we just do it on Day one !
yeah I remember those old lies ......

( post facto means 'after the fact' for thos who dont do foreign languages)
Prepare to be shocked some more Nigh
Brexit wont deliver all you have been promised
Mikey, I am very familer with S.Wales, I used to haul out of all the steel works " Who is now owned by Tata" you say you do not have immigration issues there! that's yet Mikey, when you have a min or two to spare look up Lincolnshire, From Boston, Stamford, up to Wisbech, these area were all known for the farming products, now worked by polish " Cheap Labour" Up to now South Wales has been very Lucky, maybe like myself the Immigrant have trouble with the language, I would suggest fitting gates to the Entrance to the 2 severn crossings, your time is to come

Clarity not improved by editorial efforts.

Usual incoherence unmediated by poster's customary wit,.

mikey444, Nick Clegg and the BBC, with that trio it's not xenophobia but Brexitphobia.

Wise up even Labour admitted it was not racist to show concern over mass immigration and neither is it xenophobic.
ichkeria "The Polish food shops complaint: if that isn't classic xenophobia then I don't know what is :-)"

Clearly another that doesnt know the difference between a xenophobe and someone with a realistic concern.
