TWR, you’re obsessed with food banks. I don’t know any nurses who use food banks – and I know quite a few nurses. As for lorry drivers on low wages, you have to remember that higher wages mean higher prices for all - which would mean more of those mystery nurses you’re talking about using food banks I guess.

YMB has a point. EU countries are not our sole source of nurses. The headline is alarmist.
one of my daughters is a " As they now call them" Matron Factor, she has a good working relationship with her staff and often asks Q regards their Work T/C + other issues, what I've said has come up time & time again with staff, she went on a recruitment trip to Ireland, Spain, Italy, you could count the interest on one hand, the nurses could earn as much in their own area doing something or the same with less expense & stress.
TWR, perhaps she's go elsewhere on her next recruitment drive.
*she should*

Does AB have built-in predictive text? This keeps happening lately.
I shall ask her Naomi, It may be to the Caribbean eh.
Why not?
Any Country, so long as their English is good. So The Colonies, China etc are a good starting point.

Compliment this with Nursing 'apprenticeships' and we would be well on the way to sorting the problem.

As I see it the big issue is having a closed view of th world in the shape of Europe. There are a lot more countries/continents out there.

Yes, youngmaf is quite correct.

There seems to be a blinkered view that our only option when things like this are discussed is Europe. It comes from forty years of indoctrination. In fact, Europe is often the very worst place to look for skilled staff. In particular the language problem is so much more pronounced. This is one of the reasons why applications for nursing posts from within the EU have declined. Much of it is nothing to do with Brexit but more to do with the more stringent - though still inadequate - language tests imposed. There's a big wide world out there with fourteen times as many people living in non-EU countries than live within the EU.
Yes, Australia, US, Canada, South Africa, if we can attract them.
What about North Africa, Middle East, India, Pakistan- should we actively seek to recruit from there too?

Language may be a problem.
Probably. So when you say "There's a big wide world out there with fourteen times as many people living in non-EU countries than live within the EU ", i wonder what the figure of 14 would become if we excluded non-English speakers.
“i wonder what the figure of 14 would become if we excluded non-English speakers.”

No idea. But there are 54 sovereign nations and 27 non-sovereign entities where English is an official language. None of these are in the EU. In addition there are large numbers of countries or country sub-divisions where, although not an official language, it is widely spoken. I can’t be bothered to add up the numbers but at a glance the population of those countries far exceeds (by a considerable margin) the population of the EU.

If they have the relevant qualifications, speak clear English and wish to integrate with OUR culture then I dont see why not. India in particular ha a large number of English speakers, so does the Middle East and Pakistan.

Cam I just add, that the Spanish Nurse who has been looking after my brother speaks perfect English, and is doing a wonderful job, and its a great pity that she is going back to Spain.
Great stuff, Mikey. You will find that most people do not object to foreign nurses per se. What they object to is having to deal with medical staff, usually at a stressful time, when they have difficulty communicating with them. Just out of interest, why is your brother's nurse returning to Spain?
I'd be interested to know the answer to that since she doesnt have to and most likely will never be forced to. Also lets remember all the Spanish waiters here well before the EU, we go on the we can get on now.

I suspect many EU citizens will be considering going back because of Project Fear Phase II being run by the remoaners.

NJ....I asked her that very question NJ !

And she said something like...."we are going back, before we are asked to leave"

I told her that I didn't think that she would be, but her mind was made up. Her husband is also a medical professional...a Radiographer.

My brother thinks the world of her.

Surely send a Matron on a recruitment trip to Ireland, Spain, and Italy is just going to add to the Financial Burden on The NHS?
Mikey, never mind. I expect an Australian nurse, or an Indian nurse, will prove to be just as nice.
Baldric, I didn't know NHS Matrons went abroad on recruitment trips until TWR told me. You live and learn.
