Now that authorities are realising that tower blocks are dangerous places to be living in & hundreds of people are going to have to be rehoused, the truth is at last emerging about the faulty Thatcher plan regarding people being encouraged to buy their council houses. Councils were not allowed to re invest the money from house sales to re build council houses which of course resulted in a grave shortage of council properties which of course are now desperately needed. In retrospect now very short sighted.

Whats the cladding got to do with the fire extinguishers you want Landlords to check daily or even every 10 mins in some blocks?

Oh and nothing inherently right with tower blocks either. Bad enough folk to the left and right of you, never mind above and below, and maybe behind too. Lots of places where disaster could strike and travel, and woe betide you if you are above it.

ymb We have a mains-linked fire alarm - I am considering getting in an electrician to disconnect it because it goes off even if I'm just boiling spuds! Driving me mad. I can't stop it either. A battery one I scould

Mikey: "I would like to see it made compulsory, that a fire extinguisher be placed on every landing, on every floor." - not much use in this case but also as YMB said the clientele in this blocks mean they'd be half inched in 5 minutes anyway. In all tower blocks as soon as is possible they should have a) a full sprinkler system. B) ear piercing mains alarm that sounds in every flat. c) fire retardant cladding. simples.

Yes, I agree with the last things you said. But fire extinguishers should play a role I would have thought.

not when they are not there, they'd get stolen and flogged down the local hot shop in the first 5 minutes.

according to john Mc Donnell, the victims of the grenfell tower were murdered by political decisions. (sorry no link but google "Mc Donnell grenfell murder" and take the guardian link) - looks like the electorate is being blamed for voting for Cameron.

would this be the IRA/Hamas/Hezbollah supporting shadow chancellor disgustingly trying to make political capital out of this tragedy? Can Labour stoop any lower? What a load of tosh they where murdered, perhaps, but by dodgy local politicians, builders and possibly fire inspectors who compromised safety to line their own pockets. I hope a thorough investigation reveals the full extent of this corruption and prosecutes the culprits.

ummmm - "Why can't fire extinguishers be kept indoors?" - so they give every flat a fire extinguisher? right oh! same result, flogged down the local hot shop, they don't even have to steal them! I doubt fire extinguishers would have made a dent in this fire anyway. They need proper measures as outlined above.

jourdain..you must have the wrong type of alarm fitted.If its in the kitchen an ionisation type detector is u/s..an optical type aint much better..you need a heat detector..and most have short time silence buttons. Dont swap for a stand alone battery type..they dont link to other detectors.
