I disagree - I think we are a civilised country and we are civilised because our laws make and keep us that way.
When every emotionally overwrought person who posts on here promising all manner of 'justified' torture and slow death, there is, at the heart of our society, a legal system which acts dispassionately and serves up the justice that is deemed appropriate.
We don't have to agree with the system - often we don't, which is our humanity at work.
But we do have to abide by it, and that means that we are all treated fairly - the innocent as well as the guilty, and you can't get much more civilised than a fair trial.
