I agree with that in principle, jourdain, but there's a couple of problems: as I say, that depends rather on what Trump is after, and he's categorically not after mutually beneficial deals with anyone it seems. His track record, his "America First" rhetoric, both speak for that.
And after all, the UK is also about to enter a similar set of negotiations where, you would have thought, both parties would be happy to seek a mutually beneficial outcome. The first round of negotiations with the EU possibly isn't an entirely fair comparison, but still: the attitude seems to be that the EU are adversaries rather than partners when it comes to the impending negotiations and trade arrangements. It's held by many on this site that they're only interested in advancing their own cause, rather than the UK's alongside. Which may be true, but the ultimate point is that if you think the EU is self-absorbed then... well, you ain't seen nothing yet.
