Its not often that I post in news but this piqued my interest
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-37364079
I was reading my local newspaper which has reported that there have been 30 cases of FGM in Stoke on Trent in the last year. In the comments, someone wrote that there have been no convictions for it since the law against it was bought out so I googled it thinking that SURELY the commentator was wrong. He wasn't.
If I damaged someones person I would be behind bars faster than Billy Whizz on speed. (And I have been....for a lot less)
So why no convictions for such a horrible crime?

have often wondered why too.

Dreadful thing to do to another human being, but 'it's our religion' etc is oft trotted out
Community sensitivities?
Saw an interesting (if that's the right word) discussion about FGM on HardTalk (BBC) last year, one woman was for all for it- she had undergone that, and the other woman was against it, She had also undergone FGM.
The descriptions were utterly horrific.
councils do not want to cause offence or are afraid, sad thing is the perpetrators know this, and basically have carte blanche over rules the rest of us have to obey, cry racism..they all get into a flutter, if id have my way, they would be deported..then that would send a message to all of the same ilk, stop you barbaric third world practices of child abuse or rape if you like.

The local plod are pumping in £250,000 to tackle FGM here in Stoke.
WHY??? If no one gets convicted of mutilating these womens bodies (or at least convicted of assisting in the assault of these women).
Disgusting. Short of murder, I cant honestly think of a worse thing to do to a woman.
infact id go as so far to say if i was the pm, you will be deported forthwith if you do such a such thing, with no appeals, that would send a message big time, but sadly liberals would say you have to forgive them and let it carry on, eventually it would stop..mmm whats wrong with that...what thousands of little girls being mutilated...oh thats ok then,,,not id say well then lets bring your wife and daughters to the nearest witch doctor for a little corrective surgery the mate...
imo, the CPS should 'grow a pair'

Prosecute to the fullest and not hide behind the 'it's the religion/beliefs' nonsense.

IF they live in the UK, they abide by UK law.

I'm no right winger, if anything I lean to the left of the political spectrum, but I'd love to see any leftie here defend this barbarism and the rights of those cultures who choose to practice it here in the UK and also please explain why there have been no convictions for it. Anything to do with religious/cultural freedom?
If I started a religion that said its my right to cut off my childrens ears would I also be immune to prosecution.
Most Police Forces have aimed for the 'education' approach - or so it has been said over the years.

I'm not sure how much longer this approach can carry on.

This practice is almost the dictionary definition of 'indefensible' so I don;t think you will find anyone trying to justify it on here.

A major part of the problem is the deeply ingrained cultural aspects of this horrible practice, which means that victims and perpetrators alike are frightened to be ostracized for going against their culture and their peer group. That is always going to override the notion of another culture`s laws and attitudes.

Until we can break that attitude, then this barbarism will continue.
Surely they cannot continually 'educate' those who won't be educated?
Something has gone wrong somewhere in the legal system
Mamyalynne, correct..with liberalism comes as they say respect for other mmm ethnics ways, but i say just how far, as we see it has gone to far, what next a murder a few albino people for their bones, and why stop there let's have i open fire corpse burning as not to upset hindu principles, some things in the third world do not belong here, but i bet you will get some who would say, why should we interfere it's cultural, yea so is slavery and underage sex and marriagel let alone fgm, it burns me errrrrrrr
A man gets sent to prison for putting bacon on a door handle but there has been no prosecutions for child brutalisation or FGM as it is better know.

Dave.

This stuff makes me really angry. Ive been jailed for a lot, lot less than this. WHY do these people get away with it? WHY?
Why are women been allowed to be mutilated in such a horrid way in 21st century Britain?
I had no idea that there had been no convictions for it until tonight. I'm gobsmacked.
//Until we can break that attitude, then this barbarism will continue.//

While people continue to demand tolerance and respect for religious and cultural practices, that attitude will never be broken.

AH
//Until we can break that attitude, then this barbarism will continue//
NO, until we grow a pair, prosecute and jail offenders it will continue.
nailit, why because of cultural sensitivities and evidence, parents will not admit it...err it just happened, and social services hands are tied and its overwhelmed because of cutbacks, remember it was said were all in this together cultural rainbow and all that krap
I do not 'demand tolerance and respect for religious and cultural practices'.
I live by the law of the country I live in
