Its not often that I post in news but this piqued my interest
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-37364079
I was reading my local newspaper which has reported that there have been 30 cases of FGM in Stoke on Trent in the last year. In the comments, someone wrote that there have been no convictions for it since the law against it was bought out so I googled it thinking that SURELY the commentator was wrong. He wasn't.
If I damaged someones person I would be behind bars faster than Billy Whizz on speed. (And I have been....for a lot less)
So why no convictions for such a horrible crime?

Good to see you back again Andy.
“If I damaged someones person I would be behind bars faster than Billy Whizz on speed.”

Only if there was sufficient evidence to support the allegation. In particular it would usually require the person you assaulted and/or any others present at the time to provide such evidence. In the case of FGM, that’s usually the stumbling block. In most cases there are usually only two or three people present: the perpetrator, the victim and perhaps somebody who has facilitated the crime. None of these is likely to provide any evidence to support a prosecution.

The problem is that girls are brainwashed by their ridiculous religion to believe that being mutilated is perfectly normal and acceptable. These religions and cultures have been encouraged (in the name of “multiculturalism”) to behave exactly as they wish and exactly as those still in the cess-pits where these religions and cultures are rife behave.

WHY do these people get away with it? WHY?”

See above.
i seen a documentary by meryl streep regarding fgm, it's a human tragedy fgm, the elders said it makes them cleaner ...er what the..
anyway this practice needs a total shutdown right here right now
women girls are perfect...leave them alone, or else i might be knocking on your door..........................

//A major part of the problem is the deeply ingrained cultural aspects of this horrible practice, which means that victims and perpetrators alike are frightened to be ostracized for going against their culture and their peer group//

Well someones gone against it Andy if there are already known to be 30 FGMs already reported in stoke in the last year.

It`s much easier to deal with barbarism you can see - is the point I am making.

See my above post NJ.
Its not difficult to look at female genitals (with consent of course)
nailit - // *waits for AH to start threatening me with suspension, bans and removal of posts again* //

I have never threatened you with any of those things, because I don;t ever threaten anyone about anything, ever, on here or elsewhere.

Please stop maligning me, it`s not nice.

//Good to see you back again Andy. //

I have been back from my holiday for weeks now - maybe you haven`t seen my posts, but I am here most days.

Andy, I'm not argueing with you mate, these cases in stoke have been reported and, presumably, been looked at (in every sense of the word)
Wherever FGM is discovered, if the mutilation is recent ( since the legislation specifically against it) then prosecutions HAVE to be made. I am all for educating people about laws and freedoms but they are not opt in laws and freedoms, they ARE the law and must be adhered to. The vast majority of people within the minorities you speak of know it's illegal here or to take girls elsewhere to have it done, and until a few shockwaves of trial and imprisonment start ricocheting through those communities you will find that they continue to plead ignorance and just carry on regardless. It will be a generation or more before this ceases to be the norm, in the meantime we must stamp it out with some enthusiasm. I am also about as left wing as you can possibly get and very respectful of other people's cultures, but with regards to mutilating little girls, I have zero tolerance and believe in acting decisively.

Yes you have, don't tell lies. It doesn't become you as a moderator.
Others noticed and commentated on it as well.
But please don't attempt to derail my thread.
Question Author
well said kval. My thought entirely.
Question Author
It doesn't become you as a fellow Stokie either AH...
The whole business of cutting bits off kids in the name of religion is patently absurd, yet many of our top lawyers, scientists, philosophers and assorted geniuses and their sons have bits missing........what about male circumcision? The law on this is conveniently ambivalent.
Rob, there was a thread on here recent;y about grandparents who had their grandchild circumcised.

Thread caused a bit of a furore too
"Its not difficult to look at female genitals (with consent of course)"

That would only prove that the damage had been done, nailit. It would not prove who did it (somewhat vital).
The point surely is to get the parents banged up as accessories, isn't it?

Pour encourager les autres.

So these ladies all apparently came forward and yet refused to confirm who assisisted in the mutilatation of their genitals?
Yeah of course they did NJ.
Question Author
Unbelievable, 100's if not thousands of cases of FGM and not one conviction?
Pull the other one.

I don't tell lies - so please don't accuse me of doing so.

If you don't want to derail your own thread, don't throw out defamatory and untrue accusations.

Back to the thread - // ... these cases in stoke have been reported and, presumably, been looked at (in every sense of the word) //

I have not denied the facts of your original point in any way.
