It is hard to underestimate the amount of public a) fickleness and b) ignorance. B was forced on me on Saturday when, waiting in a queue at Pisa airport, all Brits were shunted off into a separate queue for non-Schengen countries. The bafflement around me was audible and I found myself having to explain the whole principle of Schengen. Given that level of ignorance, the disengagement with politics except when it happened to be 'fashionable' is no surprise.
