I have a bit of a soft spot for JRM.
Whilst I understand that he believes what his faith tells him, I believe he is completely and utterly wrong but it would have been more news-worthy that as a Catholic he had stated that he was in favour of abortion.

Yes and I'm afraid that once again religion imparts the most ridiculous of dogmas upon its adherents. To suggest that a woman should carry and give birth to a child which was conceived as a result of such an abominable violation of her body just makes me wonder quite how someone of Mr Rees-Mogg's undoubted intelligence can be sucked into such a ludicrous creed.

As much as I don't share most of Jacob's viewpoint, I do share your puzzlement Scooping at the fuss that a staunch Catholic holds the views he does.

Of course in the game of interviewing he was never going to be asked 'Do you live in the real World - how much is a pint of milk?' as other politicians have.

Like all religions, and their followers, the rules are, shall we say, 'open to interpretation'.

This means that a Catholic may put money in the Pro-Life collection on Sunday, and then have sexual relations on Sunday night using birth control because he or she does not wish to have a child.

All followers of all religion do this - from the Muslim who shaves his beard, to the fanatic who kills Westerners because they are not Muslims.

Religious doctrine makes no allowance for human nature, but in the real world, almost everyone does, to some degree.

I have to agree with others who have expressed surprise that he is in agreement with fundamental dogma of the religion of which he is a practising adherent.

Similarly, while I personally find the three Abrahamic religions abhorrent, I have to acknowledge at least that he is following his faith "correctly" and not just picking and choosing the bits which suit him.

If you support abortion for any reason, you can't be a Catholic.
