The Labour Party is distributing a video as part of its campaign to give 16-year-olds across the UK the right to vote and says “You’re 16. Now you can get married, join the army, work full time”…. but you can only join the Army aged 16 or 17 with your parents' permission. At that age you also need your parents' permission to get married unless you do so in Scotland. Since 2013, 16- and 17-year-olds cannot work full-time in England, but can in the other three home nations with some restrictions.

Nice idea for them to attempt to generate more votes from the naïve, but a reality check for them – and for those who cling to their every word - here.

Didn't the SNP lower the voting age to 16 for the Indy Ref? Presumably they thought that move would gain them the majority for a YES vote.
Worked out well for them, didn't it?

Labour (and other political parties) really should put their brains into gear before launching onto a silly platform.

Yes, of course I would be disappointed if changing the age limit ended up with more young people voting Tory, but, as a democrat, I can't see that is a valid reason not to make the change.

This is definitely wrong regarding 16 year olds who are in Year 11 (5th form) at secondary school as they can't work full time.

The point of the OP, 10CS, is that Labour's campaign video contains an untrue statement in order to try to sway public opinion on the issue

If 16 year olds were more likely to vote Tory, rather Labour, you can be sure that our resident right-wingers, on AB, and the Tory Party itself, would be howling for a legislative change.

The Tory Party desperately needs new younger Members, as the audience at the recent Tory Party Conference in Manchester quite clearly showed. It resembled a meeting of the Telegraph Gardening club.
