Clearly motoring is so cheap that the masses have personal private transport. Surely it's time to start charging by the mile/time of day for motorways.

TTT
please explain what you consider a poor person to be in your world?
I'm curious.
Question Author
public transport ummmm, look it up we used to have some.
Alba, head versus wall interface I'm afraid with this chap.
BHJ, the next time you stop at a service area look under the Foreign HGV's trailer's, a lot are equipped with a Massive tank, this would take them from the likes of Poland to Ireland & back to Europe, but they should still be charged.
Mamya, I know, I know, sometimes I just can't help myself :-D x
TTT we still do, do you want to tread on us further?
Question Author
alba - no definitive measure but the WSS estates are full of people with jam jars, transporting 3 empty seats to wetherspoons every lunch time, QED too cheap or we are paying to much dole money.

TWR, yes foriegn trucks will be charged at the border assuming we do no deal with the EUSSR which is looking favourite at the mo. Bag of sand a pop should cover it.
NO, NO, and more NO !

We have had many years of charging for the use of part of the M4, from Wales to England, although that is soon to stop.

We pay enough already, through all the various taxes that we Motorists have no choice but to pay.

Enough is enough !
I know there are no longer tax discs, but do drivers not still pay road tax?
Question Author
no there is still no such thing as road tax.
TWR, so you'd have our lorry drivers pay a fuel supplement when they go on the continent and pay to use the rest-stops on motorways, like they do in the UK if they stop for more than 2 hours. Every country has its plusses and minusses in they way they charge; you gain in some ways and lose in others.
You don't know anyone who cannot afford a car, cannot afford to heat their home to a reasonable temperature and struggle to buy decent quality food?

Yet you have the brass neck to describe yourself as poor.

Look a bit further than your own environs.

As I said head/wall not worth a discussion with.
Question Author
road tax was abolished in 1937 maggie, good to see you are up on current affairs!
By the way TTT, you link makes no mention of charging for Motorway use.

Variable speed limits on Motorways make a lt of sense however, as experience of the M25 between Heathrow and Gatwick have shown. It stops bunching.
Question Author
cobras mamy, our benefits are among the most generous in the world, if they are struggling it's because they are spending it on non essentials.
Question Author
mikey: "By the way TTT, you link makes no mention of charging for Motorway use." - that is my suggestion rather than traffic lights.
TTT...don't be such a clever sticks....we still pay millions of pounds every year in whatever the current name for Road Fund Tax is called, and well you know it.

I am sure we all knew what Maggie was saying !
Maggie, depends on the emissions of the car which reflects how much the motorist pays in road duty.

TTT, I'd move, if I were you, there's a lot of private housing estates which also have welfare lazy bums
Quite a lot of of council estates also have a huge amount of bought homes.
(wonder what flavour of government thought that would be a good idea?)
TTT - nit-picking about the colloquial name for a tax does nothing to enhance your argument.
TTT....(16:02)....and my point is we already pay huge sums every year to drive from A to B.
