This sort of thing happens all the time, for instance if you had a Cuba stamp they wouldn't let you in the US. Resolution Cuba didnt stamp the passport!
A basic rule of travel is always check your destination for various things. If you choose to rock the boat then dont be surprised when all hell is let loose upon you. And dont expect Consulates to come running. They wont.

I worked for a company in Saudi Arabia many years ago and at the interview I was asked if I had a stamp in my passport for Israel and if I did then I would need to get a new one or I wouldn't be allowed in. As it happened at the time I didn't have one but a few years later I did in fact couple of them.
