Thanks Islay, I’ve managed to attract some stalkers but have been on sites where I’ve been trolled by some real sickos so a few grumpy old men can’t pierce my thick skin.

But it’s not a powerful analogy, for the reasons I’ve already cited. It is not analogous at all.

But the immigrants are not doing the same. The two Irish men are not breaking any law because whilst their marriage may be “sham” there is no legislation which makes it open to challenge. Immigrants who indulge in similar arrangements are breaking the law because legislation specifically makes it illegal to participate in a marriage ceremony simply to gain an advantage in the matter of their immigration status. As hc correctly summises, it is probable that many heterosexual couples have married purely for financial advantage, quite possibly including the minimisation of tax liabilities. Their marriages are not open to challenge and nor is that of the two Irish men.

This is an awesome story - I love hearing stories of people who have legitimately avoided tax, the trouble is too many people cannot separate avoidance from evasion.
Having an ISA is tax avoidance.
These men have legally, and therefore morality doesn't come into it, struck upon a way of avoiding what is an insidious tax - good for them.
There is not a person alive who, if offered an entirely legitimate way of paying £50 tax rather than £100 tax, wouldn't seize it with open arms. Anybody saying they wouldn't is a liar.
These men have used the legal system to their advantage. Good for them.
