jackdaw - // If I go to the local Chinese/Indian takeaway I pay when I order, before my meal arrives. I have no problem with that. // I think that's standard practice for most takeaways, for obvious reasons. But if your takeaway asked you to pay in advance, but not the next customer who is Chinese or Indian, then that would be racism, and that is what happened here.
I think a lot of businesses make rules based on their experience. We have a shop in our town that doesn’t allow schoolchildren in if they’re in more than groups of two.
I have NEVER been asked to pay in advance on the continent TTT, where the hell do you eat? With regards to this, yes it's blatant racism, and even if they had asked 'all bikers' to pay in advance that is still discriminatory- we need to be discouraging anything where people are treated in an inferior manner because they belong to a certain group, be it racial, sexual, ethnic or recreational.
Naomi...that used to happen in the shop near my school back in the 80's when I went there, so that's nothing new.
The shop across the road from me has 3 members of staff for when the kids come out of school. But that's treating children who do stupid things for stupid reasons (like a simple dare) not adults eating in a restaurant.
//we need to be discouraging anything where people are treated in an inferior manner because they belong to a certain group, be it racial, sexual, ethnic or recreational. //
Fair enough, but how do you tackle the problem of 'runners'?
OR are you ok with the business taking the hit if it advances right-on thinking?
When my daughter was in Oz there were bars her and her friends wouldn't be served in simply because they were Irish. There is discrimination everywhere.
NAOMI, if the shop banned only two or more black schoolchildren or only two or more white schoolchildren that would be racist. As the ban covered any two or more schoolchildren that is not racial or religious discrimination.
Runners are an occupational hazard, and the best you can do is design the interior of your restaurant so it makes that hard to accomplish. i'm not suggesting it's tough luck and people ought to be prepared to take a hit, but there are other things you could do to make a runners life far more difficult than simply discriminate against people who are your patrons.
Oh thanks Talbot, I didn't read that properly- apologies TTT, yeah the pay before you fuel thing is really common on the continent, can't say I dislike it though particularly, it's just a different MO- we've got a garage here that does it actually in Tenbury- handy because that makes it a 24 hour garage.
kvaldir: "I have NEVER been asked to pay in advance on the continent TTT, where the hell do you eat?" - I was responding to OG who said he had to pay in advance for PETROL.
AOG - // Perhaps the restaurateur had experienced problems before from persons of a certain race, once again some have to suffer for the actions of others. //
Perhaps so - but assuming that one black customer running before paying means that all black customers will potentially do the same, is racism.
It's a text-book definition of racism - which means it can't really be deemed as a sensible business practice!
