Zacs, This ever-present urge to undermine/criticise/abandon Britain and British to whatever comes along never ceases to amaze me. Maybe I’m just not trendy or right on enough, but one thing I do know. You rarely appreciate what you have until you lose it so be careful what you wish for - and if that puts me on a par with aog in this instance, so be it. Looking at...

Your Prince Philip point is odd.

Are you saying that nationality is based on patriotism and honour?

What about Audrey Hepburn, Spike Milligan, Eddie Izzard and Emma Watson?
TTT

To be fair, it was naomi24 who went into the question of Britishness here earlier, so it was only fair to get her perspective on what is British is.

According to her, me and my siblings fail her test.

Thank God I know she’s talking pure balls!
I'd also like to know what is British culture. I have England born Indian friends, Jamaican, obviously English, and I'm Irish....the only thing different between us is the food we eat.
Krom, //The British have a long history of mocking the powerful.//

Indeed, but the British don’t have a long history of making fools of themselves and shaming this country in the process.

SP, //Are you saying that nationality is based on patriotism and honour?//

As Togo says, If they have to ask...…...they aren't.

//What about Audrey Hepburn, Spike Milligan, Eddie Izzard and Emma Watson?//

What about them?

//According to her, me and my siblings fail her test.//

I didn’t say that so please don’t misrepresent me. I don’t know you or your siblings.

I apologise - I incorrectly assigned what someone else said to you.

I withdraw the question.

Someone else said that to be British your parents have to have been born here. I can’t see who that was at the moment.
Is he Mexican? If not he is guilty of cultural appropriation. He should not be wearing that hat as it is a *** take.
I tend to think there is a difference to being British, however you came by that, and Britishness.

British is more a determination of your affiliated state.
Britishness is more a state of mind and culture.

Very well put.

Why can't you see who that was?

YMB13.18, you forgot to mention that Bournemouth, has the highest proportion of Drug and Alcohol addicts, also Benefit claimants in England, don't trip over the needles on the Beach,
" chew on that".
The Mayor of Sheffield is on TV at the moment for those of you interested. The Wright show on Channel5.
"...the only thing different between us is the food we eat."

Then there you have it. You wouldn't catch a British person eating curry, or a Chinese. Er...er.... :-)

If it was just where your parents were born there would be less British people in the country lol

How would that work with one British parent and one ‘foreign’ parent?

More interestingly --do you consider yourself to be English or British ? Programme on tv last week pointed out quite a lot of differences. I consider myself to be English .
British
NJ - I meant day to day menu, although my Indian shop keeper loves boiled bacon and cabbage :-)

I think perhaps the Mayor’s biggest sin is to have gotten...uppity.
