Some are saying that there has always been violence in our society because we have always had violent people, and that the perceived increase is merely due to the amount of reporting of it. Well, since around 1950 the population has increased by about 10,000,000 people, so it's only logical to assume that violence has increased.

sanmac, I think the point is that, with more stabbings, shootings, acid attacks, etc., etc., the nature of the violence we are now seeing in our society has changed.

Yes, Naomi, the methods being used are changing; however, I was referring to some posts which have implied that there hasn't really been an overall increase in violence, merely an increase in the reporting of it.

Every time I heard someone writing about the UK getting more violent, the fist thing I do is look at the official stats (which always refute this).

The I ask myself why. The answer normally leads to how it’s reported.

We didn’t have anywhere near the number of ‘instant journalists’ we have on the streets now, but this fact is always ignored by those who claim it’s ‘more violent now.

Sqad...yes, I was born in the 70's.

Minty....it isn't so bad. Everything is caught on CCTV so trouble makes are more reluctant to kick off. Most pubs have bouncers now as well. You have to have them if you want a late license (at the weekends)

Your point is well taken IF you are going to use the media as an excuse for increased violence.

But i am not....i am using the evidence of personal experience which i do agree has it limitations.;-)

Also 1975 to present time is somewhat limited when ones has experience of 1950's to present time.

I looks more violent, it feels more violent and in my opinion it is more violent.

From your link SP, police recorded an 18% increase in violent offences against the person between 2016 and 2017, if I am reading it right, so its not just about perception or media coverage

In the first 18 years of my life i live in what is now known as a council estate where the police did their round in pairs and in the next 6 years between the East End of London and Stamford Hill ( a Jewish society)
Also 6 months in A&E in the East End and another 6 months A&e in Brighton.

Violence? of course......but not the type and frequency of violence that is seen now.

Acid attacks are certainly new. I'd never heard of them until recently. But....I remember a lot of people back in the 80's carrying knuckle dusters and stanley blades.

Of course it's broken Britain and ne'er will be the same again because nowadays anyone can see violence and mutilation and worse on video on the internet, video games and the like!

Yes ummmm we did have violence years ago, I was brought up in a pub many yrs ago....but as Danny said it wasn't gratuitous violence it was often retaliation, a fist fight etc. Rarely if ever knives, guns, and people inflicting horrendous injuries. You think you have it covered. I am much older than you....today is MUCH worse than yesteryear!

So for punishment ha ha ha....there isn't any today. IMO anyone doing such things should be shot, they are rabid no good gutter filth...no use to anyone and should be put out of the human race. SOZ guys....my opinion and I know many people who feel the same!

I was born in the late 30s yes there has been violence in the 40s ,50s but what I am trying to say is ,there seems to be a viciousness now that wasn’t on the scene then,machetes and Samaria swords can’t remember them being used.

Years ago the yoofs could’nt afford a pushbike never mind a moped. More acid attacks,mugging on mopeds ie bag or phone snatches,opportunist raids into coffee bars and snatching laptops.Stuff your heads in the sand if you wish to protect the obvious perps but personal ownership of anything portable and valuable is asking forna violent forefiture by the usual suspects in the hoodies.

I feel safe where I live but I really wouldn't want my kids to move to London or any big city.
