Tusk says it undermines the EUSSR single market. Looks like out with no trade deal, which should have happened 2 years ago. We all knew that it is, and always was, the aim of the EU from the day we elected to leave.

PP - I'm certain that you will correct me if I am wrong. I know that we were the recipients of aid under the Marshall plan, but I was also under the impression that paying off the loan was a burden we bore for many years and that it was finally paid off not that many years ago. Hence, the victors paid for yonks whilst the defeated received a lot of help. I am very willing to be corrected by you or anyone who has the figures to hand, but my basic feeling is that we paid off and suffered from so doing- other countries didn't.
Am I confusing the Marshall Plan with the Lease-Lend Plan?
No, that's not quite true either. Germany was still repaying its Marshall Plan loans until 1971, for example. Strictly speaking, the reason the UK was still paying off its debts was because it received separate loans amounting to something like four times the help any other country got, which added to our burden whilst also making a huge, much-needed, injection.

Still, describing the UK as contributors to the Marshall Plan seems a gross distortion of history.
Jim360 - sorry, slight digression - have you been into school yet?
Apologies to all, a follow-up from another thread.
@jourdain, as it's a digression can I suggest you ask in a separate (perhaps even a dedicated?) thread?
Not really news this Barnier said ages ago it was a non starter.

However Gromit could be correct. If, and its a big if, Treason walks away and embarks on an all out plan then they may come back at the last minute simply to get their dosh, Teresa the appeaser will capitulate as she always does being a closet remainer and we will be worse than when we started. Plus we will have a labour Government in since no one will ever vote for the dreadful woman.
The EU are very well know for playing hard ball and taking it to the wire.

They are being no different here.

I would be very surprised if the didn’t agree a deal, at the very last minute mind you.

However as I’ve always said and especially if it is the Checkers plan, if they agree to a plan you can be sure it is in fact a deal we should run a mile from. But May won’t. She is so desperate for a deal the Brexit red lines will fade to pink and eventually smudge away in the rain.
Checkers. Oh dear. Spelling the word correctly might give your opinions some credence.
*** off Zac if you weren’t such a pompous *** it might give your opinions more credence.

Fuque that for a game of soldiers.
LOL @ Vetuste.

Nice to see you back posting after recent events.
Thank you, ChillDoubt.

You know full well that Great Britain funded it's war effort, for years before the US were forced to act by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, by having to take out loans or pay up front for arms and raw materials. These loans were made by the US when we had no hard currency left to pay up front. We even sent warships laden to the gunwales with gold in the early days before the US would even let a ship set sail with provisions. Germany of course looted and stole provisions and hard currency throughout the length and breadth of Europe to fuel it's war machine. As did Japan in Asia. We paid back, with interest, over many years for every bullet and grain of wheat that we were forced to take on credit to fight the evil. The US was awash with cash...….our cash.....after the war and were able to be magnanimous with our money. What "aid" we received as part of the Marshall plan was gobbled up by the commitments we had to pay back the loans we took out to fight Nazism. The Germans and Japanese had no such commitments, and were able to rebuild and re-tool at a much faster rate than us gaining a massive advantage. The companies in these two Countries, now of course, sell us their motor cars that are manufactured by their war time arms manufacturers. Meehh.

Macron is now of course in full pumped up ego mode and calling all Brexit voters and advocates liars.

a lot of the marshall plan aid received by the UK was wasted.

Gromit //Gromit No one wants a No Deal so a last minute deal WILL happen.//
I doubt that very much.

Indeed it was Mushroom.....by the Post War Labour government. How do you think that the NHS was initially funded?
lets just walk away from this douche de merde and keep our £39bn.
that's only partly true togo - yes, some marshall aid was used to establish the NHS. but a good deal more was used to prop up an international status the UK simply couldn't sustain, or afford. and while it was labour that got the blame for this, the conservatives would have done the same, they were as committed to implementing beveridge as labour was, as well as funding a status we no longer deserved.
An insult not only to Mrs May, but to every true Briton, we should now give them the Agincourt two finger salute, and stand alone with pride.
