as he is the Mayor of London he must do more to stem the tide, it may not be easy but someone has to call a halt, beg the government for more money, put more police on the streets and out of their cars, get the parents involved, the buck stops with them, they should know where their kids are going or what they are doing.
It makes very grim statistics.

The mayor can do nothing but chat, he has the trappings of power and most likely a nice pension but that's your lot.

The country is skint after propping up thieves in the banking industry so best not fret, just let them sort it out between themselves and move on.

I don't think more police in the streets will do much as you can't put one on every corner, not that I don't think it a good idea for other reasons though

Then he’s chosen the worst possible period in history.

There’s too much concentration on what’s to be done once the crime has been committed, rather than working to prevent the crime being committed in the first place.

If my smartphone was stolen by a bike gang who were subsequently arrested and jailed, I’d be over the moon.

However, I’d rather not have it stolen in the first place - and designing solutions to that is something that will take decades to resolve.

There are estates up and down the country - from Hastings to Aberdeen, where increasingly, the idea of going out to work to earn your money is simply seen as ‘an option’ rather than ‘the rule’.

Sp1814, I agree, it's the prevention of crime that should be the object, but that is really impossible isn't it? You mention the mo-ped muggings: How can the police prevent those incidents happening...They can't.
