Because she didn't name himto the police at the time and there was a non-disclosure agreement?
Obviously it's just an allegation at the moment but regardless you've been told over and over again why some people don't come forward.
She accepted a huge sum of money and signed a confidentiality agreement.
From your article:
" But the next year, she reportedly reached an out-of-court settlement with Ronaldo involving a $375,000 (£288,000) payment for agreeing never to go public with the allegations.

Her lawyers are now seeking to declare the non-disclosure agreement void."
She has obviously ran out of money and ran into ' leery larry lawyers' who think they can get her a nest egg

"Ms Mayorga had filed a report with Las Vegas police shortly after the alleged incident.
But the next year, she reportedly reached an out-of-court settlement with Ronaldo involving a $375,000 (£288,000) payment for agreeing never to go public with the allegations. Her lawyers are now seeking to declare the non-disclosure agreement void."

oh I see, she's spent the pay off.......seriously?!
This is a strange case.

She told the police she had been raped but did not disclose by whom despite knowing who he was.

//Her lawyers are now seeking to declare the non-disclosure agreement void."//
So will she have to pay back the £288.000 ?
>Her lawyers are now seeking to declare the non-disclosure agreement void.
But I bet there is no offer to repay the $375,000.
I bet she did not know who he was, she was probably told later after she reported the case and thought 'Kerching!' More money by going to Lawyers than to court. Then she got a payout, she's spent up so wants more. Woman like this do no favours to real victims.
If he did do it how is she not a victim?

A money grabbing one but a victim nonetheless.
>I bet she did not know who he was,
i' doubt that. He was very well known at the time and he doesn't strike me as the sort of person who would keep quiet about who he was. It's possible she went to the police to up the ante as part of the negotiating process
she might not wanted to
Ummmm I'm not disputing they had sex I'm disputing it was not consensual. She has sex, he makes it clear it was a one off, no chance of being her becoming a WAG so she cries rape. Would not be the first time.
That's just guess work though and I did say 'if' he did do it.

auntlydia is bang on, classic gold digger.
The rich and powerful are apparently protected from any accusations because, clearly, any accusation is solely to get their money or ruin their rise to power. Can't possibly be any other reason.

//clearly, any accusation is solely to get their money//

Clearly, in this case, jim. Nail/head, well done.
Question Author
jim she took a payout and came back when the money ran out. Initially reported the "crime" with no details. Does that suggest to you that she's a real victim?
How else do you compensate people? We have a criminal injuries board who compensate victims of crime. You can't undo the crime so victims get compensated with money.
I don't mean to imply that Ronaldo definitely did it, but, I mean... what hope is there to hold people to account for sexual assault when they actually *are* guilty if everyone instantly assumes the accuser has a sinister motive, be it money, politics, or something of that ilk? How many people have kept silent about what happened to them because this is exactly the sort of response they expected: doubt, sneering, slander and demolition of character?

Finding a balance between treating the accused with due process, and taking the accuser seriously, is clearly not easy. I even edited this post once to replace "victim" with "accuser" just now, where the former is clearly too far in favour of taking the claims of assault 100% factually with no balance. But there has to be a better way to respond than digging for dirt on women every time they come forward.

There's something wrong when the very characteristics of money, fame, and power, give both real abusers greater opportunity to ply their trade, and provide a convenient shield to hide behind should a complaint ever be made about them.
