I recently started a thread which reached the dizzy heights of 727 answers before it was closed down for some reason.

Does anyone know what is the record number of answers in a News section thread and what news item did it concern?

Hi AOG - your 'Tommy Robinson' thread to which you refer holds the record for the number of posts by a country mile.

The nearest one to it was one posted by Jogger Jayne a few years ago about a gay OAP in Brighton - that got past five hundred, but nowhere near yours.

I think in the end the thread was just spinning its wheels and getting into nasty personal arguments, so it was ground to a halt.
I'm curious.

Do the regulars here feel that starting a thread that attracts hundreds of contributions is a good thing?

Or, perhaps is that seen as one of the main goals of members here.

Would you offer your thoughts, please.
I think there's an optimum length. Too many and one loses interest or feels obliged to counteract someone else's mistaken views. Likely to drift off subject into a squabble too. Too few and there's insufficient substance.
That's my view IJKLM, I've seen people regularly congratulated on how many posts they have on their thread as though it was the be all and end all of the site, closely followed by one person filling up all of latest posts. Don't get it personally.

Thanks for that. I wondered if I had missed a big part of what people here think is important.
I think it's rare that a thread can stay interesting and informative for that length of time - it often ends up with a sort of tennis match between one or two who won't let something drop.
Yes, it seems that way.

Another thing that seems to happen is that given the mix of characters, misunderstandings take place.

One person says something in jest (maybe) and another misinterprets and starts defending themselves.

And then it kind of spirals downhill...
I thought the Apotheosis of ABed reached over a thousand?
Apologies, i see it says ‘news’ thread.
There are very long threads about, but in other categories.
we had 1000 on a legal thread
where the Indian lady seemed particularly resistant to advice but was keeping us up to date - the lawyers have now done X etc.....
as the posts got more heated and instructional

then BuenChico googled it and found she had done the same on another forum three months previously INCLUDING the dramatic and sudden intervention of the lawyers - showing it was all a spoof

Ten or twenty regulars got suspended and it was Very Quiet Indeed for two or three weeks

The then ed was slower to click than Chris BC and got really knarly about it ( and blamed us)
o god you are going to tell me OAGs thread was serious or something
Record number must be about a dozen or so . . . .. then they all get repeated ad infinitum

Well spotted canary, have you Tweeted that?
// Record number must be about a dozen or so . . . .. then they all get repeated ad infinitum//

recycled comment - but what is wrong with that ( see above about repetitions )

Stravinsky(*) said about Vivaldi -(*)
eet eez just warn concerto written out 514 times

(*) two composers one of whom wrote 514 concerti

[ A rich American lady went up to Stravinski said - O Mr Stravinsky your music very Modern....
and he replied - no madam - it is just badly played ! ]

I hate repetitions and always try to jazz up a thread with something new

Above is a perfect example of what is wrong with AB imo.

Thanks for that Andy, but regarding the closure of the thread, you could be right but on the other hand providing no rules are broken, I can't see why a thread needs to be closed while enough ABers find it interesting enough to continue contributing to it, after all what real harm is done?
Well as i pointed out.. At the end of the thread one users last 16 additions were completely unrelated to the topic at hand. More of a shout from the sideline kinda geez trying to antagonise people trying to contribute to discussion, i personally assume that's why it was closed. It got pathetically immature
Oooohh a competition - bring it on!

It is not a competition because it all down to all those ABers who found the the tread interesting enough to spend their time contributing to it, of course you are always going to get some who delight in sitting on the bylines making their own none contributing comments.
