Gutted For My Eldest Son

For the last 2 1/2 years my eldest son has been training with the aim of joining the armed forces, specifically the Royal Marines. His dedication and motivation have been amazing. As part of his preparation he applied to join the reserves but was recently referred due to his hearing. He’s been to see a specialist today and was told they can do nothing about one ear and might be able to do something about the other - but he will still be ineligible to join the forces. I’ve been gutted all day but he’s just got in and he has a plan B - I would have been in a heap in the floor in his position.

What a horrible end to his dream.
He sounds like the sort of person who will give 100% to whatever he decided to do. Good luck to him ... and the rest of his siblings.
That is such a shame. I have a feeling he will do well no matter where he ends up though. Best of luck to him xx
Very bad news that, sherr. I can remember your posts about him wanting to join the reserves some time back.
Fingers crossed for him that plan B works out.
How sad for him. I hope his plan B works.
Isn't it odd that we take our children's letdowns even worse than our own? I do hope he can recover from this disappointment and find something else he would like to do. Make sure he gets the ear they can do something about done.
Hope is Plan B works for him Sherr. I am sure anyone with Children would wish him all the best.
Good Luck to him, whatever he decides.
He sounds very resourceful and that will stand him in good stead as will his training thus far - go Plan B!

I’ve felt terrible for him all day, he is disappointed but is being mega pragmatic about it all - he’s a lovely young man (but I would say that).

It is definitely a tough life in the RMs, I was accepted in my early 20's and left in my 40's after The Falklands, to be fair I loved every minute of it.
I would go with charm bracelets too, with a weddingy charm to start. At least, if you are ruling out the puppies :-)
Sorry.. xx
It's a shame, but the fact he has a plan B shows how practical he is. I suspect living with the reality of poor hearing has prepared him for such disappointment. I wish him well.

No probs Pixie.

He didn’t know he had poor hearing. He has had glue ear repeatedly but was never aware that it had actually impacted on his hearing although he knew he might have to have an operation if he wanted to do scuba diving, etc.
Your son sounds like a very sensible and level headed young man. Hope his plan B works out well for him.
the poor guy. feel gutted more for you Sherr, than your wonderful, sensible, level-headed son who, having a plan B, shows what a wonderful upbringing he's had. x
That is such a shame for him, I wish him well whatever he goes on to do.
blimey hadnt realised that being deaf was a bar to joining the armed forces ( xc in wartime of course)
Sher. What a resilient son you have, he already has a plan B.
I know a pilot who is deaf in one ear but he can still fly a 747 because he can hear ATC and all communcations through his headphones. Don't give up
