D-Day Commemoration, Portsmouth
Britain does these things so very well!
Lump in throat, tear in eye – and that from someone who wasn’t around on D-Day but is nevertheless eternally grateful for the sacrifice made by that generation. I hope it is never forgotten. Heartfelt thanks to them all.

Ex sapper called Jones still had painful memories as he related what he experienced going on to the beach. Bought a few lumps in my throat. They have my utmost respect and admiration.
Looked like they were treated royally on the boat with singing and dancing(war time songs) and plenty of beer. Bless em all. The Long and the Short and the Tall.
The French are out in Force again to show their gratitude. Shame some can't.

//slaughtered by the Allies than needed to be.//
There is a great difference between the word slaughter and accidental collateral damage. If Caen wasn't taken by the allies before the Germans rushed reinforcements to the front then there would be no liberation of Europe from Nazism. Caen was key and iunfortunately the civilians could not flee as it was heavily defended by Germans. It had to be bombed or all allied troops would of died in vain on the beaches.
If you want to use the phrase slaughtered civilians then I suggest you turn your attention to this village and similar in France.
