I certainly recognise that speech. It sounds very similar to a highly praised speech attributed to Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard. This speech was denied and snopes said it was a HOAX. It went viral. It is strange no one turned a hair when it was circulated but then it wasn't attributed to POTUS was it? //: 'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT....

'You don’t have to be a victim of racism to brand something as racist'

Well....sort of....but It just becomes an opinion, like the very first two comments prove. You might be right, but it's merely by default.
It’s not the same point at all zacs. Johnson pointedly refused to defend our ambassador. He did to his credit speak out against this latest Trump outburst. I wouldn’t expect him to go overboard on the language but we can see what he thinks.
Zacs - // I can't see any people on here who might be offended by Trump's comments. //

I am not personally offended by the President's remarks, because they were not offered towards me personally.

// Only they can say whether it was racist. I do wish people would realise this. //

That's not actually true - racism is an abstract concept, like war.

You don't have to be being shot at you have a view that war is inherently a bad thing.
ich - // Yes I know Johnson can’t use that sort of language now A Hughes. But like I say, we know what he thinks //

Indeed we do.

Perhaps Mr Johnson, when elected, will feel free to spout any vile and ignorant views he has via the web to the world, although I doubt it.

It ls clear that Mr Johnson is both an intelligent man and an experienced politician, aspects of personality that are both sadly lacking in the President.
'I am not personally offended by the President's remarks, because they were not offered towards me personally.'

Exactly.

I do wish you'd stop trying to conflate things by irrelevant comparisons. Someone else made the point the other day.
Zacs - // You might be right, but it's merely by default. //

Again I must disagree.

Some things are simply 'right' regardless of opinions one way or the other.

Child abuse is wrong.

That statement is right, and opinion agreeing or disagreeing does not alter its status. It is right, but not by default.
It’s worth also recalling that Johnson’s retort to the Putin bilge about liberal values was that “liberalism will always triumph”
You’d never catch Trump saying that. We shouldn’t fall into the trap of lumping the two into one, much as we may dislike - or indeed like - both
War and Child abuse are clearly wrong - the whole of mankind agrees. The difference with racism is it's aimed at a faction of mankind and only they can truly say whether it's offensive to them (i.e. racist).

I trust you can see the subtle but important difference.
He didn't say 'people who don't like living here should go and live somewhere else'.

He was referring specifically to four congresswomen, three of whom were born in the USA, and what he said was that they should “go back” to the countries they came from.

It was staggeringly ignorant and stupid utterance, and the kind of thing a racist buffoon would say. Is Trump a racist, I don't know to be honest - let's leave it at someone who often says staggeringly ignorant and stupid things that are similar to the kind of things racist buffoons would say.

Actually, no, I can't.

You appear to be saying that because child abuse and war are world-wide atrocities, and racism is, quote " … aimed at a faction of mankind and only they can truly say whether it's offensive to them (i.e. racist).// - it matters less, when clearly, it doesn't.

The linking fact between War, Child Abuse and Racsism is that all three are abstract concepts as well as realities, and as abstract concepts, uninvolved individuals are able to form and express opinions, as we do on here.

If such concepts could only be decided, formulated, and resisted by those involved, the world would never evolve, since the number of individuals affected by all three together are still a fraction of the world's population.

I am white and British born, but I still know that racism is wrong and that my opinion is also a fact.
Ludwig - //It was staggeringly ignorant and stupid utterance, and the kind of thing a racist buffoon would say. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck ….

And that is a fact that the defenders of the President seem keen to slide past - confusing the issues by referring to the 'message' rather than the words used.

The simple fact is, the message is the words used!

The President is many things - subtle and nuanced are not two of them!!
You don’t have to be a “racist” necessarily to say something racist. In the same way you don’t have to be a card carrying member of the Nazi Party or Islamic Jihad to do anti Semitic stuff.
I agree tho that strip away the “isms” and the “ists” and it still stinks.
Does this guy actually want to win another election? The US economy is doing rather well at the moment and his approval rating recently hit its “highest” level. There are surely only so many constituencies you can alienate and still hope to win an election.
// Does this guy actually want to win another election? //

People love it though Ich. The more *** he spouts, the more popular he gets. 'twas ever thus.

Although it is acknowledged that the President put himself forward to enhance his TV career status, and was as surprised as anyone when he actually won, I think he does enjoy the status, just not the boring tedious stuff, like actually making decisions, interacting with Congress, and running the country, that sort of nonsense.

The issue in him losing the next election is not his all-round personal charm and winning personality, demonstrated on a Twitter account near you as I write - it is the continued absence of the ability of the Democratic Party to find a candidate with a realistic chance of being elected, to stand against him.

Where have I said that? You're doing what you do with Naomi and reading things into my argument which aren't there.

You can indeed express an opinion to an abstract concept. But it is only that.....an opinion.

Your opinion is only a fact by default as you're not the people being offended.

Trumps words do indeed prove that it's hard to evolve. For some. This place is littered with such bigotry.
ich - // You don’t have to be a “racist” necessarily to say something racist. In the same way you don’t have to be a card carrying member of the Nazi Party or Islamic Jihad to do anti Semitic stuff. //

And you don't have to be black to recognise and deplore racism either - so on that basis you are actually demolishing your original point.

No, I am suggesting what I believe you may be saying - as my statement says "You appear to be saying …" - and if I am incorrect, then fine, argue against me, but you can't get past my point by suggesting that I am saying something you have not said, when I took pains to avoid exactly that reaction.
//If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck …//
That'll be Donald Duck you are after not Donald Trump. Doh
// If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck …. //

Accusations of racism (and every other form of ..ism) are overused to the point they've become pretty much meaningless these days.

I'd prefer to just address the fact that the man is an obnoxious and ignorant charlatan, liar, braggart, bully and buffoon that frequently says stupid things - this being one such occasion.
