It not so much an opinion of her but rather of the party she leads.
The so-called Liberal Democrats have made no bones about their pro-EU stance. That is their privilege. But they seem to have forgotten that Leave secured the referendum result and that they have only 14 MPs (including 2 defectors from Labour via "Change UK" whatever that is or was). But since the referendum, their original and reluctant acceptance of the fact that we are leaving has transformed into downright hostility and insolence towards those who voted to leave.
Consider this from para 1.1 (“Giving the people the final say”) of their 2017 manifesto:
// Liberal Democrats campaigned for the UK to remain in the EU. However, we acknowledge the result of the 2016 referendum, which gave the government a mandate to start negotiations to leave.
.
.
.
That’s why, when the terms of our future relationship with the EU have been negotiated (over the next two years on the Government’s timetable), we will put that deal to a vote of the British people in a referendum, with the alternative option of staying in the EU on the ballot paper. We continue to believe that there is no deal as good for the UK outside the EU as the one it already has as a member.//
It then goes on to describe what it terms a “Hard Brexit” (what most people would term a “proper” Brexit) and what it requires to make it soft. This includes (among other things) remaining in the Single Market and Customs Union; Freedom of Movement; Maintaining alignment with the EU’s environmental and employment standards;
So, it moves from the reluctant acceptance of the referendum result to immediately describing its vision of Brexit which is, to all intents and purposes, no Brexit at all. But then we come to the Good Doctor Cable’s antics in the run up to and following the EU elections in May. Remember “B0ll0x to Brexit” and the T-shirts? So do I. Effectively B0110x to the 17.2m people who voted for it.
The so-called Liberal Democrats are nothing of the sort. They have sought firstly to conflate the idea of leaving with that of “leaving” whilst remaining and then moved on to outright rejection of the referendum result with added insults for good measure. They are an utter disgrace. Ms Swinson should also bear this in mind when she considers what the party might do next. They are part of the foreword to their manifesto, written by Tim Farron (remember him?):
//That’s why the Liberal Democrats will not enter into coalition with either Theresa May’s Conservatives or Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour.//
We’ll have to wait and see.
