When did the British copper start emulating the French gendarmes? They looked on in the eighties when vandals burned lorry loads of lamb, now our police look on whilst a baying mob vandalises a public monument. Is this the gutless approach we can now expect from our police?

The statue of Colston and the arena named after him have been discussed in Bristol for quite a while now. The Colston hall was shut some time before Covid-19, with a view to renaming it.

Maybe the police thought they might as well let people pull the statue down rather than inflame things further by bashing protesters as they did in London.

They have said they're going to identify the perpetrators and launch an investigation - ie prosecute the ringleaders. That seems like the cleverest thing to do rather than wade in and beat up everyone including innocent bystanders like the Americans did. That would probably just have kicked off more rioting and destruction, ultimately doing the police themselves no good.
