It would be fuel on the fire.//
So fighting back is not not allowed in case it upsets the extreme left who are using an event thousands of miles away to attack a legally elected government whom they don't like? Let's not kid ourselves that this is anything but an attack on the current government. BLM and BAME should combine and call themselves BLAME.

Instead of wasting time trying to get "offending" statues and monuments taken down, they should campaign for education about those people and their place in history and the times they lived in. Wrong as we see it now. Then they might understand the changes that HAVE taken place over the past 200+ years.

The opposite of doing nothing isn't "fighting back". I want the Police to de-escalate, not exacerbate, the problem. The problem with water cannons, rubber bullets, and other such tactics is that they are indiscriminate, treating the violent and the peaceful protesters as equivalent, when they are not.

Boris Johnson’s water cannons, bought by the taxpayers for £320,000 were sold as scrap for £11,000.
Water Cannon are illegal in the UK, so it is very stupid to call for their use. I doubt any even exist in this country.
We have sufficient laws to prevent disorder and criminal damage, but they are not being used. The Home Secretary is remarkably silent about this law and order issue, perhaps her resignation would help?

De-escalate?
Have you actually watched any of the 'demos'?
I'm not talking about carefully selected snippets that people choose to make their point, I'm talking about live feed for the entire 'demo'.
Should you have been so moved to have done so you would have seen that the only way Police could have de-escalated would be to have got on their busses and gone home and left the streets to be vandalised at will.

shoota, I'm replying to the suggestions that have been repeatedly made, on AB and elsewhere, of deploying violent and indiscriminate tactics. One person, hopefully but not certainly in jest, proposed to "read the Riot Act and then open fire". Those will not help if they are used. Hopefully the Police won't even consider following these suggestions.
