The wearing of masks/coverings could be made compulsory is shops and pubs.

I understand how it could work in shops (even though I don’t think it’s necessary) but how would it work in pubs?

Lifting the mask up or down every time you sup is daft.

For Funks Sake people have been going to the supermarket from day one without a mask.

I have worked every shift in that supermarket mere feet, nay inches away from people and most of them didn’t have a mask on and neither did I.

Now that I am back working in the supermarket cafe, we (but note no one else who works in the supermarket) have to wear a face visor.

The virus is so intelligent that it knows to creep round the supermarket leaving people alone but pounces with immediate effect in the cafe.
Hence the expression .: yer tea's oot, An indication to someone that he or she is in serious trouble. [

It’s astonishing and how intelligent this virus is; how it has leant to be so discriminate is amazing.

Cassa can’t catch it on the shop floor, but it’s so virulent she has to mask-up in the cafe.

It decided to ignore the rioters, but people on a beach was bad.

Anybody going to a pub is rife for infection, but going to a supermarket is ok.

Frankly, it’s all total *** - just live life normally.
20.23. Make up your mind.( People on the beach was bad)? ( just live your life normally)? em, they were on holiday, on the beach living their life normally. Do you want them to hide behind the sofa or not?
DD got all the answers, and got it right, but the rest of the world has got it wrong.
//20.23. Make up your mind.//

DD has made up his mind. He was not saying that going to the beach is bad. What he's saying is that under the current thinking the virus seems to be super intelligent. It is said said to be able to readily infect those on the beach but not those demonstrating for BLM or whatever; cassa wears no mask when in the main shop but has to don one if she goes into the coffee shop in the same building. Meantime the government is trying to get shoppers to feel confident and return to the shops and is considering telling people to wear masks in shops to help instil that confidence. So I can go and spend a couple of hours in a pub and no mask is required. But if I pop into Tesco's to get a pint of milk I must mask up. This means two minutes in Tesco's must be considerably more dangerous than two hours in the pub. And I'm supposed to suck that up and say "it must be right".
One thing you can bet on, Gove says it won't be compulsory so it certainly will, and soon.
NJ //If I pop into Tesco's to get a pint of milk I must mask up.//
At the moment it is only guidance, so if you don't want to wear a face covering then don't.
According to the latest news, Boris is going to tell us in a few days time whether or not masking up will be compulsory. Why can't he just tell us now??
Ken // Why can't he just tell us now??//
Probably waiting for the science, or testing the waters of public opinion.
He could just be thinking hard about it and gathering opinions and evidence from lots of other people.
Danny; With the boffins obviously at loggerheads over the wearing of masks, I guess the latter part of your post to be more likely.
BHG; "He could just be thinking hard about it...." Nah!
It could be his usual blustering @ holery
This mask thing is leading to some very unpleasant situations. The other day I was roundly abused by some holidaying Luxemburgers because I walked into a restaurant without a mask. It seems reasonable to me that I needn't put on a mask to walk 20 yards from the car park to a table, where I don't need one. I was told that I was 'fatally dangerous' to everyone around me. As it happens, before I retired, I worked for WHO all over the world and take their advice seriously. The majority of the masks being worn are singularly ineffective & I'm very much on the DD side of this argument.

Nevertheless, the day after the restaurant incident, the president of Catalonia announced that masks are obligatory at almost all times and in all locations, with a €100 for non-compliance, with very few exceptions. This is politicians for you. There's evidence that Covid-19 transmission is more likely in enclosed spaces, so we have to put on a mask to walk down the street! IMHO, this is Public Health theatre similar to the Security theatre put in place at airports: a political response to a problem that has the authorities grasping at any straw that will get them off the hook.

NJ at 1.04pm.

Indeed.

I admire you for having the patience to explain to Teacake what was already perfectly clear to anybody with an ounce of intelligence; I was going to explain it to her, but decided as she's that dim I couldn't be bothered to spoon feed her.
I suspect there is disagreement in the cabinet about how to proceed.
I hope they don’t go down the “compulsion” route. On the other hand stating that it won’t be compulsory but effectively demonising those who don’t wear them is almost as bad.
It’s not the same as seat belts, as he been suggested. With seat belts it’s pretty obvious what the benefits are I’d have thought.
The “science” is still divided. And in countries where is is no (voluntary) mask wearing culture, it can be a divisive subject.
Just been on news that Boris is delaying due to conflicting messages coming from ministers over the weekend.

^^^Good.

Hopefully common sense will prevail and masks will not be a requirement,
"Chaps and chapesses, will making the plebs wear masks in shops cost us votes?"

That's the only question for fly by night politicians.
