The wearing of masks/coverings could be made compulsory is shops and pubs.

I understand how it could work in shops (even though I don’t think it’s necessary) but how would it work in pubs?

Lifting the mask up or down every time you sup is daft.

Douglas, I wish we had ‘like’ buttons on AB. Here’s a virtual ‘like’.
Governments tend to tread carefully on divisive issues where there is no obvious right or wrong answer.
And do they should here. The rule on public transport is widely ignored it would seem.
You realise how stupid Johnson is, when you see him walking around a London Ambulance Station advising everone to wear masks in Public, and yes you guessed right, he himself was not wearing one. And to think People actually voted for this Head
I think as well as the science which still only seems to say that masks protect others and not the wearer, its the twin issues of proper use and enforcement. Improper use adds to the risk and if you can't enforce then it damages the image.
when was the advice put out for everyone to wear masks in public? Must have missed that

I cant say I am persuaded - masks good when you cant social distance er - not quite what we were talking about
" There are no human controlled trials on the efficacy of universal mask use in stemming SARS-CoV2 transmission"

ans so you make up some.

I like Trumpos complaining that expertments had not backed up one of his stoopid ideas and he came back
" well do some that DO back me up!"
We wore them in shops yesterday - our smallish Tesco and Lidls.(My first time in a shop for 4 months and my last time I think. I now prefer online shopping). I only bought 1 item! Considering our local little town has only 9000 ish residents I probably didn't need a mask, but better safe than sorry. I would certainly wear one if I shopped in a large town or City and in a supermarket anywhere.

I was surprised that quite few people were wearing one, including youngbprople. It was very hot yesterday and it made me feel hotter.
Agreed JJ, I wouldn't use them in a lidded container, I do use them in a glass and mine have rubber ends.

Suffice to say that any fixed solid object could pierce an eye if it enters the eyes.hard enough
I fail to see the relevance of that to this thread.
I mentioned stainless steel straws on page one after a link was posted to a mask with a hole for a straw.
Boris has not got the bottle to make one decision under his own steam, he's the biggest coward this country has ever had for sure.
He gets everyone else but himself to face interviews, and to sow the seeds. Regarding Gove saying that its basic good manners to wear a mask, is a sure way of starting a brawl in a pub, or anywhere else for that matter, he's has dumb has dumb can be, shocking!!
I'm sure the latter comes under the heading, putting the cat among the pigeons, ruddy dip sticks the lot of them.
//At the moment it is only guidance, so if you don't want to wear a face covering then don't.//

Yes I know, danny. I was adding to the debate about whether it should become compulsory. Interestingly the current guidance says this:

“If you can, you should also wear a face covering in other enclosed public spaces where social distancing isn’t possible and where you will come into contact with people you do not normally meet. This is most relevant for short periods indoors in crowded areas.”

This is contrary to the WHO guidance which says the greatest risk is during prolonged (which it defines as >15mins) face to face contact. Passing somebody in the supermarket or shop presents virtually no risk and checkout staff are protected by screens. The time element of “social distancing” has been completely lost in its interpretation and any encounter with another human being – however brief – is considered potentially fatal.

The guidance also says this:

“It is important to use face coverings properly and wash your hands before putting them on and taking them off.”

To comply with that means that once you put it on you must wear a face covering until you can get to somewhere where you can wash your hands before taking it off otherwise you risk passing an infection from your hands to your face. One precaution I have taken since Day One is not to touch my face whilst I’m out. If I’m to wear a face covering in shops I will have to keep it on until I get home which is often some time later.

This government seems to believe it must “do something” (which usually ends up making the population’s lives more unpleasant) virtually every day. It doesn’t - especially when they don't have much of a clue why they're doing it.
//Why can't he just tell us now??//

Because he's got to wait a day or two then look at Twitface or whatever it's called to see how many CoronaMoaners are telling him he's murdering people.
The majority of people in my town do not wear masks and I would imagine, like me, do not want to either!

When you read the contrasting views on here it’s not hard to see on the other hand why there’s a certain amount of hesitancy

Thank you for having the patience to explain to Teacake my perfectly clear post.

I was going to explain to her, but decided against it - if she cannot understand, I couldn't be bothered to spoon-feed her.
