The wearing of masks/coverings could be made compulsory is shops and pubs.

I understand how it could work in shops (even though I don’t think it’s necessary) but how would it work in pubs?

Lifting the mask up or down every time you sup is daft.

Odds, yes, oddly enough they are an interesting mathematical conception. If the odds of winning a huge lottery are 1 in 15 million, I'd love to be that one person. However, if the odds are 1 in 4000 if getting Covid if you don't adhere to the guidelines...
Sush, dd is trying to get to sleep, counting 4001 sheep. :0))
Sorry - meant to add that that was the thing that terrified me too (as a kid literally
hid behind the settee when dr who came on)
//Wouldn't we have to prove our 'medical' condition for not wearing a mask? If not, we could all claim to be claustrophobic or asthmatic or whatever.//

No ken. In fact only two of the seven on the (non-exhaustive) list of reasonable excuses are medical related.

//Can't really get my head round people that are calling other people paranoid about this virus, are they not just being careful, may be its you that's paranoid DD with forecasting the latest odds?//

Well, teacake, you can be careful. But you have to weigh up the risks against the costs. The risks are extremely low as DD has pointed out. Would you, for example risk a sizeable some of money on something that had a 4000-1 chance of success? The costs of hindering further an already crippled economy are enormous.

//DD is trying to express how much braver he /she is compared to other folk, and he/she has got a better grasp of the situation than anyone else on the planet.//

It’s nothing to do with bravery. It’s simply weighing up the risks and the costs and making a reasoned decision. Not everybody on the planet (or even in the UK) is of the same mind. I subscribe to a number of forums and one in particular is virtually 100% in line with my thinking. The country needs to get a grip and understand that going out is not fatal, passing close by another person is not dangerous and handling something that somebody else has touched is quite normal.
Let me try and get my head around this. Say, next week, the government make it compulsory to wear masks in shops, etc. En masse, we use one of the (non-exhaustive) reasonable excuses in order not to wear one. What's the point in making the ruling in the first place?
By the way, i'm not agreeing with the government's decision and fully recognise the need to get the country back on it's feet. Just in case there are any 'snipers' not yet in their beds.
I think the answer Ken is that we will have shops etc with some with masks and some without - other places too.

Hence the choice is there in a way, however the odds stack up we are largely in charge of our own destiny.
Wouldn't it be interesting to see a preview of how the history books will depict the "Covid Era" in about 100 year's time? We have read and seen articles and photos from the 1918 Spanish Flu era and probably wonder how "they" came up with all those cures and precautions etc.
Boris is either making decisions for the good of us all and without an eye on future votes or he has actually gone doolally. https://twitter.com/search?q=masks%20(to%3Aborisjohnson)&src=typed_query&f=live
I already know the risks, and don't need DD or anyone else to inform of such. I'm also old enough to understand the damage its doing to the economy now, and for the future. And what DD don't know is that I have never been in lockdown what so ever. I won't allow anyone to dictate to me what I do or were I go or when, much to old for that. The whole situation is of no worry to me, I'm just concerned for younger people that have not had a life yet, unlike me.

True, mamya. To be totally honest, I've only done one main shop since lockdown began and not because of any fear of catching the virus. More the 'Russian Roulette' scenario of not knowing the best time to visit the store to avoid the longer queues. I am English through and through but I don't do queueing very well at all. Luckily the corner shop and a nearby Farmfoods have kept me sustained :-)
I'm sure the History books will show an interesting story and hopefully with the research that's ongoing some good will come out of this, though I feel the viruses will always have the upper hand in some way or other.
late evening, Ken. Supermarket stocks may be lower then but you'll be very unlucky to have to queue, or even pass by anyone less than a metre away.

Or if you've over 70, first thing in the morning you may find they let you in with the NHS staff.
PP if the current odds are 4,000-1 that is based on the current guidelines and legislation, including social distancing.

If there were no-one adhering to the legislation and guidance, the odds would be lower than 4,000-1.
Late evening's for watching tv, Jno. And no, i'm not over 70. Nowhere near it :-)

In round numbers there were 160,000 road accidents last year.

You are 40 times more likely to be in an accident than catching Covid.

Will you stop driving/being driven?
I was once told that with a face like mine, I don't need a mask!
Oh yes, and if you're in reasonably good health, you've more chance of being hit by a meteorite than dying of CV-19.
