The UK does not have the technology to deliver 5G (and beyond) telecommunications systems, so we had planned to buy the kit from China.
But concerns were raised about national security, handing such vital systems to a potential enemy who could use it to spy on us, or sabotage the country.
So instead, we will buy the kit from the USA. I suppose that is an improvement on the Chinese, but we will still be at the mercy of a foreign power, and the NSA are probably already spying on us.
Obviously the delay in implementing 5G will be bad for our economy. Just hope the US 5G works, previous high tech systems bought by the UK taxpayer have had a nasty habit of being very costly, and not working properly.

From Finnish and Swedish tech companies as a matter of fact.
Undoubtedly this decision has been partly brought about due to concerns over US objections, ironically also due to US sanctions on Huawei itself which has caused other security issues.
And pressure from backbench MPs
It feels like the right decision however. There will be threats from the Chinese - there already have been - but if the west can show a reasonably united front, then China is bound to have take notice of that.
To this end it will be good to see the end of the Trump presidency. If ever there was an element harmful to western unity it is that.
