At the moment it is nothing more than a form of illegal graffiti. Perhaps Ms Reid would be worthy of a plinth if she ran a successful campaign to eliminate modern day slavery perpetuated by her BAME brothers in Leicester and elsewhere. So far she has benefited no one apart from boosting her own ego and is not worthy of public recognition.
A better statue, if they want to honour diversity, would be one of two small children, one black, one white, holding hands. That would represent true equality.

at my auld college 1890- under a cloud at present but all things pass - we voted on a proposal "we deplore the college allowed the rowing club to be renamed the Winnie Mandela Boat Club".
This caused an amusing "frisson" amongst the dons whilst they tried to find out what was going on
Why not have both with an information board between them giving the history.

I don't think the council had any choice, 1, it could have opened a can of worms and unauthorised statues would appear everywhere.
2. it would have been pulled down and dumped in the docks.
