Face Masks In Shops

Went into a Kingston on Thames newsagent yesterday, man in front of me didn’t have a mask, lady behind me didn’t have a mask. Guy behind counter had one, as did I, but he didn’t say a word to them. There is a police station across the road, six police sitting in a van outside. Nothing done.

I’m wearing one in shops; it’s completely pointless to do so, but I’m wearing one simply because I can’t be bothered to have a row with some busybody prat who feels they have a right to tell me what to do.

The chance of catching it, or giving it, by fleetingly passing by somebody in a shop, is probably about as close to zero as it’s possible to get.

Mask wearing, one might add, has been happening much more in other European countries. But it doesn’t seem to have stopped the thing returning in many places. Even in 97% mask-wearing everywhere Hong Kong

thinking cynically - the government has mandated masks. if the virus then propagates unabated, that must be because the public are either not wearing the masks, or not wearing them properly. thus any second spike is clearly the fault of the public.

DD - my sentiments entirely. Mind you I may take to surreptitiously pushing it down below my nose so I can breathe. The sooner that Boris and Co realise that face coverings/masks are useless the better. They could just be optional for the hide-behind-the-sofa brigade.

More than that, it's positively dangerous to the wearer as far as I'm concerned (especially bearing in mind what you have said above). See my post at 20:28 yesterday in this thread:

That's the theory, Danny. But in reality, nobody has to wear "proper" masks, and they aren't.

I can Blame Boris and Hancock Danny, they are repsosible for implementing this ill thought out and pointless 'law'.

As usual with knee jerk laws they fail to think of the wider consequences.

I'm afraid Boris has not come up to scratch. I dont know whether its because he caught the virus or he is knackered with the birth of his new child but either way he is failing to do a good job and needs to step aside. I was one of Boris' biggest supporters, it is not easy for me to write this :-(

Patel also needs to go - all hot air. Shame really - I had high hopes for her too.

That is the problem with Johnson I’m afraid. And always has been. He’s great at making cheery speeches and can get everyone feeling good. But there’s not always a lot of substance to it.
Patel is simply a disaster area all round.

Most of the shop staff are working behind a screen, which is there to protects us and them from any viral transfer. The mask wearing is to protect us from each other, but with no additional resource to police it, we can only hope that people follow the rules. If I worked in a shop I would politely remind unmasked people that mask wearing is obligatory but at the end of the day there is no one to enforce it officially.

No-one has mentioned the fact that some people are exempt from wearing them and they don't have to prove why.

Been to Tesco, B and Q and local garden centre. Everyone wearing masks and no problems. Everybody good natured. My only problem is I don't recognise anybody and in and our little local town it was hard not to meet and chat with people we know. I think name tags should be worn!

I've seen quite a few wearing masks in public now, apc... but they are literally just a couple of strips of fabric over mouth and nose, or even a scarf. What is worrying, is that people might think ot makes a difference, and take less notice of social distancing.

We found the same in the village this week, Apc.....Dave is very recognisable even with a mask so folk were waving and calling hello, Dave....hello, Gness and we're thinking who on earth is that!

Well from what I've seen of UK social distancing, Pixie even a strip of fabric is better than nothing.

Maybe.... but it won't make a difference, so may make people even less likely to keep away from each other. They will think it's protecting others, so it seems a false sense of reassurance...

B and Q were being very strict! There were very few in there. The lady at the entrance was rather draconian.

Out of interest, and I am very happy to be educated here! If a mask allows you to breathe, how does it keep out viruses?

Just askin' - Are shops (supermarkets particularly) handing out free masks on entry for anyone who doesn't have one?

Bad law should be treated with disdain or else the people are not in charge of themselves.
