MPs rejected the plea for free school meals to be given during holidays.

Should be very good news for all the Answerbanks who think poor families spend too much on smoking, gambling, etc, so should get NO more handouts!

Let them eat cake! Or nothing.

Charles Dickens would not believe it.

Not everyone is in the same boat. There are 67m people living on this island all with different circumstances. Yes there are some nasty scroungers and benefit cheats but then there are those who genuinely are poor for one reason or another. If I had the money I would love to donate some to feed children from low income families.

As a full time working single parent of a child who is on the low end of the spectrum, I've never needed to claim benefits for him even though I was told I could.
Thank you Trevor the Pug and Mozz for your replies. This is not a personal story, but one of a young neighbour. A little understanding goes a long way.
I hear Rishi has been barred from his local pub due to the way he voted on this. Probably never went there but the national sentiment is growing.

Decent true British people, pubs, cafes and restaurants are behind what Rashford is trying to do, local councils are also offering to help in the face of government denial.

I can't begin to wonder why you might find the inspiration of a successful young black man so distasteful.
// since we were told......we will look after you from birth till death.//
er cradle to the grave actually

and if the writer was brought up in the late forties then it was already with him and had been in planning for five years - but ho hum this is AB

the costing of the NHS was a disaster - started off over budget and boys and it was budgeted to decrease in cost ( yes go down that is! boys and girls) because everyone wd be cured - - -
but that never occurred

and as for the yonger generation - -- socrates was executed for that very thing in oo 405BC so some things never change

yeah lets hear it for Marcus R

It seems that many, many restaurants and cafes are offering free meals for kids as a result of Rashford's efforts. And that's at a time when a lot of them are struggling themselves.

The milk of human kindness hasn't run dry quite yet, no mattwr what some ABers may think.
"The milk of human kindness hasn't run dry quite yet, no mattwr what some ABers may think."

True, and most of it was knee jerk pro-gov / anti poor reactions and when posting opinions suddenly realised they were exposed for not having a scooby about the issue such that they have now (for the most part) shrunk and shriveled back into their caves.

Perhaps we can forgive them for their inadequacies on national matters and rotten anti-British opinions, perhaps they fear being in the minority. The worst shame of all is if they continue to do nothing and just keep pointing with a sneer.
To be honest Ummmm, I'd have thought any kid eligible for free meals during school term must be part of a family already on welfare benefits. In any case, delays are a separate issue. They ought not take that long to kick in anyway.

I’d like a few more categories really, like Most Pompous, Funniest, Most Offensive, etc!

I don't think anyone here are bothered about Rashford's race, I think the spite generated to wards him and his campaign is down to the reaction a lot of ABers are having towards anything remotely woke.

Unfortunately, they seem to be suspicious of anybody being charitable or accepting of others, and will immediately accuse them of wokeness, or even worse, virtual signalling. Anyone left of Enoch Powell is fair game at the moment.
You can safely award yourself a BA for most pious Allen.
I think that much of the antipathy here is directed not at feeding hungry children but at feckless parents who fail to do so through wilful neglect.

Devoutly religious?

Not a dictionary on your desk, then?

I would understand that JD, if it wasn't for folk tarring everyone with the same brush. People are struggling, jobs have been lost, or people furloughed. Right now, a lot of people are desperate.
Allen, pious has more than one meaning. I think...

"making or constituting a hypocritical display of virtue"

...is more what DD was suggesting.
I prefer self-righteous or sanctimonious, which also a definition of piety.
