Disgraceful that this sum of money should be spent on unveiling her statue in the midst of a pandemic and economic crisis.

who raised the money for it to be erected
I watched this just a few minutes ago as part of the Jeremy Vine show and immediately thought .....tick- tock - tick- tock
Who'd be the first here , let's say I wasn't surprised ;)
Its not clear whose paying, it says the council have underwritten the cost but it allso says "She was keen to stress that the cost of the unveiling would come from private donations,"

Tories of course who presumably don't need the services of their local food bank or help to pay the mortgage.
Sure there must have been other statues of eminent people put up in times of economic crisis. I don't doubt there will be a lot of enmity, comes with being Mrs T
money well spent on our greatest peace time leader. Thank you Maggie.
so only Labour people need help financially through the current crises.

First ….

//Grantham council’s decision to foot £100,000 bill//

Then ….

//She [Amanda Schonhut, director of fundraising for Grantham Museum] was keen to stress that the cost of the unveiling would come from private donations//

So who is footing the bill? The council - or is it to be privately funded?

Whoever it may be it’s a ludicrous amount of money for the unveiling of a statue. I would like to see a breakdown of the costs.

That was a non sequitur Emmie.
Who's paying for it, diddly?
//£100,000 unveiling ceremony on Tuesday //

And why exactly did the ceremony cost 100k?
you made it sound as though only Labour people needed help, surely help is needed across the land, all parties all faiths, all nationalities.
Me too, Naomi. And if it transpires that the council are footing a larger percentage of the bill than 'private donations', it wouldn't surprise me were many to ask for a refund on their council tax.
Question Author
I suspect partly funded by Tory donations but the council will make up any shortfall "The council’s controversial decision to underwrite a £100,000 unveiling ceremony".
you don;t want it because of who she is - would you approve it been someone from the other side of the political spectrum
But ....//She [Amanda Schonhut, director of fundraising for Grantham Museum] was keen to stress that the cost of the unveiling would come from private donations//

I'm wondering if this might be just a case of sloppy journalism - or could it be the Guardian doing a bit of stirring? Nah.. they wouldn't do that ... would they?
Underwriting the cost of 'something' is not the same as paying for it....
many will protest at this unveiling, probably many who weren't even born when she was in office
I personally agree to the statue being erected in her home town. She put the little town of Grantham on the map when she became our first ever female PM. I just cannot see how an unveiling ceremony can cost so much money.

Emmie - I wouldn't approve of spending that amount of money on any statue when economic hardship is staring us in the face (well - those who have their eyes open of course)
