Are they? I'm not sure, we have a Thatcher Close here and the estate was built in the 70s so I doubt it would have been named after those men who thatched roofs??

I have an interest in street names as they can give an insight into local history. Most new estates have streets named around a theme. You can often date buildings from the names. In Wallsend where I grew up there is an old estate with street names such as Victoria, Albert, Diamond, Jubilee. This tells me that the houses were built c. 1897. There is also a pre-war estate with seemingly random names, one of which is Chicken Road. Nothing to do with poultry; it and the surrounding streets are all named after former mayors of the borough. I could go on, but I suppose I'd better try and get a life!
